hey all,
Just curoius on how you all choose your next model project. do you just wander the hobby shop aimlessly
until you find something that looks cool or do you pre-plan everything before you buy???
thanks,

Me too - haven't wandered around in a hobby shop in a couple of years now. Too much eye candy at home to choose from!

I dig around the stack of figures till I find something:
A) I want to build
B) Have the reference mateiral for
C) Looks like it has no major issues to deal (unless I feel like dealing with major issues)
D) I try to vary the time period as well, I may do a string of WWII stuff, but then I try to find something from another time period.
Unlike a few of these other guys I keep buying stuff (shhhhh, I've had good excuses for all those packages on the front step) so there always seems to be something to build....

Lately, like in the last 18 months, I have been building stuff that I have put off building in the past because I was afraid of it, ie., PE, zimmerit, indy and aftermarket tracks, etc. (sorry about all of the abbreviations). Anyway, after reading about airbrushing here, indy tracks here, PE here, zimmerit here, I have been building the kits that I was afraid I was going to "ruin" 2 years ago. Other than that, they are going together in no particular order and I haven't had to make a trip to the hobby shop either. Hat's off for the info and inspiration everyone.
Thank you,
Shaun

I could copy Keenanīs message here and it would read tha exact same for me. The only things extra above that are a few extras I have started for the campaigns here. As good a reason as any to start a kit.

I usually reach into the cupboard and try to grab something that strikes me at the time. I like to have some sort of idea how I want to have it look when it's finished. I've had several times that I've had stopped something that I just couldn't get into doing or visualized how I want it to look. If there's nothing in the cupboard, my wife and I go to the shop to get some more!!!! Hopefully something that would look really good finished and that I can really get a good visual of the final product.

Well, the last three models I've started, including the last two I've finished, I built for campaigns. I think they are the BEST idea here because it get people building things that they wouldn't have built before.

Usually I will reach into my pig pile and work on what ever I grab.Other times if a long awaited kit shows up,I rush to get to it.

I plan everything out, buy the Friul tracks, the Eduard PE and barrel, get the Tamiya paints I need, clear the worktable and...........
go nuts because I just saw the 1/35 Leopold in the hobby shop and began to think about those chilly autumn New York nights, and how it would be a great 2 month project........ It's only $80, no big deal... the wife won't mind.....

Hmmmmmm...
Since I'm just re-learning this hobby, but do have 50+ kits in the basement I usually head down the stairs, stare at the stacks and try and visualize a finished IDEA. Most of my projects (all of which are still theoretical at this point) are based on a story I want to tell, or a moment in time... seldom did I ever build a VEHICLE, because it was a vehicle.
It's the story...the background...the event that inspires me.

General Objectives:
1. Find a kit that's on my list
2. If it's not on the list, buy it if it is as important as the listed kits.
3. The listed and unlisted kit has an option to be put in a dio or just build it on its own.

I don't seem to be able to build "one" at atime. I prefer about two or three going at once. as for subject matter, well either aa group build here or at the IDF armour group or Just knocking off a series of one type (currently working on Israeli patton series)

For me it's usually one of several factors that determine what I build next:
(that is assuming I actually finish the last one)
1. I sift through my growing home collection of boxed kits and see if one makes me go "hmmm"
2. If I am perusing my LHS and come across a good deal (ie. 1/16 Kubel for $40) I gobble it up, or if I find a model that interests me and looks cool at the time.
3. If I have seen a History Channel/Discovery/TLC program or a movie with a certain vehicle in it, I run to my LHS and look for it.
Normally I can barely get halfway through a kit let alone finish it...I have several that are about halfway done. But lately I have been going start to finish (construction-wise anyway) within a couple of days (my Krupp, Kannonenwagen, and Elefant).....hmm...what next. Might get that Leopold!!

I see something on the tv, read something in a book or get my inspiration from web-sites like this one.
Well, I'm always working on at least 10 different models! - I work on one of them for a couple of weeks, then I go to another model! Therefor it can take me a couple of years finishing a project!

I have started a couple of kits for campaigns, a few more for inclusion in dio's that I have been wanting to do, and a couple just because I wanted to. Other than the campaigns, I don't feel time constrains to finish everything before starting something else, which basically means I do whatever I feel like doing whenever the time is available. My Leopold showed up on my porch yesterday, so I will probably do some work on it sooner rather than later...
