Superb model. For anyone else making another NI Saxon, you could cover the front with vandal anti climb paste. This was used in some areas. Stops the scrots climbing on your bus. Before you knock them with ur baton gun

What a pleasure to watch, ive followed this thread with great interest as ive had an AA saxon with PEAK turret sitting in my shed unbuilt or almost ten years now trying to decide what i want to do with it.
Ok so i will have to lose the PEAK turret but watching your build proggressing has got my creative juices flowing and after seeing the pics of the Hong Kong police variant i may even have to invest in another one.
Saxon patrol here i come, thanks for the inspiration, im just gonna take a look at your pig now.
Regards Nick.

"Aloha ʻauinalā" Johnny and thanks for the kind words!
I'm really glad you liked this effort. It was fun to build and was easier than it looked! You should crack on with your Saxon when you get the time.
If you ever need reference material for your saxon just PM me your email anytime and I'll forward everything on! ..it would be great if you could also do a build log here on armorama!
Alan: thanks for the update, I'd love to see someone like Concord Publications do something on the Saxon, its turned out to be such an interesting vehicle to me and I was surprised by how many variants there were!

Dear Roy,
There are a few others in the local (Hong Kong) market, one of them is 1/25 Die Cast of the APC version with full interior and two smaller 1/72 for both APC and Command Versions.

Wow! Truly fantastic work, Roy! I've built the AA Humber Pig and have a Saxon just sitting in the box awaiting my attention --- my plan is to convert it, like yours to an N.I. Patrol vehicle... Truly inspiring work, Roy! No doubt, I'll be studying it when I get rolling on my Saxon. And I can't wait ta see your AA Pig build!
Keep up the great work --- thanks again, Roy.
Regards and Aloha,
Johnny B.

Murdo: Thanks a million bud
Mike: Thanks a millon too mate!
In regard to your question about the Saxon lettering, the Decals dont come with the Kit,I spent the time carefully putting the lettering in place using a thin piece of masking tape placed horizontally as a guide.
The AA saxon kits are not suitable for Saxon Patrols (used in Northern Ireland) They have to be modified (see my frst posts, the white areas are where I scratched the conversion. Other little bits were altered too).
The Hotspur kits do come with the red confidential number/wording stencilling however.
AA are releasing the Tangi and Snatch soon too so I imagine Derek Hanson will have some nice sets in these kits, cant wait!
Enjoy the SAS Landy Kit, I built one of these and converted it into a Wolf used by the Irish Special Forces (ARW) in Liberia from circa 2003
Alan: thanks too for your kind words! Whilst researching this saxon I came across the Hong Kong and Nigerian versions too, I really liked the Hong Kong colours! Thanks for posting the pics, is the Resin Kit made by you??? Very nice!
Shane: Thanks bud! I was thinking of bringing her to Cork for the IPMS gig but wasnt aware of any Dublin Show yet, i must check it out, ta!

Dear Roy,
Great work and it reminded me of the Saxon Armoured Cars used by the Hong Kong Police which were recently replaced.
A few photos for sharing.

Great stuf Roy ,ace photography too. Am I correct in believing that the Yellow letters don´t come with the AA kit or did you just think the Archer ones are better ? if not it´s a big oversight on their part. Does anybody know if they come with the RUC Land Rovers ? BTW in reply to your previous question ,I´m doing the SAS Land Rover & just as I´m begininning to see light at the end of the tunnel ,I´ve got less time on my hands. Great stuff AA but definately not for beginners or the faint- hearted. Congratulations again.

..Just finished the Saxon, she's drying with a coat of Hannants Acyrlic Matt Varish at the moment. Spent about 4 or 5 hours in total since yesterday with the Yellow stencilling, I'm chuffed with the results..
I'll be taking the finished photos tommorow morning and I'll post them up in the afternoon

Well guys this is it for a few days until the Archer bits arrive.
My next photo posts of this Saxon will likely be the finished product and I'm hoping it will be before the end of the week, fingers crossed
I decided to go with Vehicle 10KK57 as she was the most numerous in my reference material. I cut up a few spare AA reg plates I had and put the bits together.
Here she as at the moment anyway, its not a bad photo but the flash emphasis the brown wash which isnt that apparant in the flesh ..anyway the finished photos will be taken with natural light and in a better envoirnment than my "man-cave" with a 90w (almost yellow)overhead bulb
..I'll start my pig in another thread shortly

Baker : Thanks man, all kind words more than welcome here
David: your HMVF link was wonderful, I spent an hour earlier trawling through it and apart from some great photos I saved for reference there was also some great technical information which was enlightening, thanks a million bud!
Pat M: cheers for your photos too bud, this pig has seen better days! But the detail in the higher pixel photos will do nicely for reference material too, thanks man!
Pat K: I always aim to please and my mind has been made up here by this thread, I'll go with the flying pig as my next kit. I'll probably go with a later more beefed up version rathar than the early mesh wing version (I might do this in the future with an early Armoured Landrover). Photo reference is hard to come by of the latter wings but I managed to claw together a few bits so I'm confident I might have enough to get by! (and I think they are the same ones if not similar to the wings used on the later saxons)
heres a sample; this one below was 1986 in Belfast. The bottom one is around the same time, note the Infantry with M16's not SLR
I think the reason behind this was (and I could be wrong) smaller rounds in the M16, 5.56mm as opposed to 7.62 in the SLR (less damage with the 5.56mm but still a fatal round if aimed correctly), add to that the rifle was lighter and less comborsome than the heavier SLR. Also There was the option of semi-Automatic rate of fire with the M16. ..maybe others know more about this, I'd love to hear ???
I'm just after giving the rest of the saxon a good whack of dark wash and I'm waiting for it to try before I clean her up. Decals then and I'll post a photo. I'm afraid the final photos with the yellow stencilling will have to wait until towards the weekend as the last of the Archer stuff has'nt arrived yet

I'm gonna upgrade the AA kit but I'm still indecisive as to what guese this Pig will take but I'm leaning towards a version with flying wings
Ooo Ooo.... A flying PIG. I'd always wanted to do a model of one of them. I definitely hope you do this as I am interested in seeing your build.
BTW, Every time I hear of the "flying pig" I am always reminded of the phrase "when Pigs fly" meaning....never (which is when I'll finish this type of project).

David: thanks for your kudos too, glad your enjoying this build. To answer your question about whats next, well its definatly got to be the saxons predecesor the Humber FV1611 APC (you gotta did the "PIG"!!)
I'm gonna upgrade the AA kit but I'm still indecisive as to what guese this Pig will take but I'm leaning towards a version with flying wings ..I'll probably start it this week as there is not much more I have to do with the Saxon whilst I'm waiting on the decals and media paper to arrive from the states..
..after that I have loads more ideas and kits in the stash for vehicles both sides of the Border
Ah the Pig, good choice Roy. I've been tempted to get this one myself.
There might be some useful piccies here for you:
http://www.hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.php?7062-Humber-PIG-Pictures
I'll certainly be following your builds.
