Recently I purchased some "flat" black Testors and MM paint. When I applied it I noticed a problem, it stayed glossy. So I went back to the store and bought another bottle of Model Masters. It still had this problem This has never happened to me before.

Now I'm just wondering if anyone else has encountered this?
Mabye Testors has decided to save money by only making Gloss Black and labeling it as both types?

Thanks,

How well stirred/shaken was it? The other possibliity is if you bought two bottles with the same problem from the same dealer, you might have gotten a bad batch or mislabled bottles of paint.

Make sure you have the paint mixed thoroughly and if it still comes out glossy, return it to the store. It could just be a bad lot as AJ suggested, or may be old? I've never seen this happen personally, all my MM paint dries up before I can use half the bottle.

I had this problem a few times ....... I stirred well and glossy effects. But I was talking to some guys at a IPMS meeting and they suggested even more stirring. Now I stir, prod/jab and stir some more. I havent had this problem for some time. Give this bottle some extra effort and see what it turns out like ....... if its still glossy, you may indeed have got a bad batch or misslabel. Funnyly enough, black used to give me the most grief also!

I have had the same problem also. I also added a little thinner and mixed it and the problem went away.

It certainly sounds like your paint wasn't mixed well enough. Often I will use gloss black in place of flat and then shoot it with a coat of flat finish. I find the gloss colours tend to flow better and sometimes give better coverage.

I had the same problem, and then I mixed it really good. Then guess what, no problem.

I also hate it because Model Master caps are really hard to get off after the paint gets on them. I am still waiting to get an answer on how to keep the paint from getting on the screw part of the caps.

Wipe the inside of the cap and the threads of the bottle as soon as possible after you open the bottle, each time you use it. This should reduce the problem.

Thanks for all the advice. I tried mixing(more) and thinning and that seemed to work. Its not perfect but its flatter now. Its pretty hot where I am now (30 'C avg.) so mabye thats affecting my paint as well.

propboy, make sure you're getting the NEW MM bottles, they should have a black logo with 'acryl' written in white on a red bar. I had that problem with the old MM formula and eventually quite buying it.
