Tom Cromwell reviews and builds Italeri’s recently re-issued late-production Tiger I with zimmerit.

A couple of things one might do to improve the kit:

The support legs on the engine hatch should be just behind the handles, as you can see on this Sturmtiger:

Dragon provide two covers for the heater port, one representing the loose part. It just needs the bolt heads added back. So there should be plenty of these in the modelling community's spares boxes.

The hook on the engine hatch should be moved:

Great review. I really enjoyed building the Initial/Early version of this kit. It was a real challenge and worth the effort if you prefer a 'craftsman' kit for a change of pace.

David,

Thanks for the info! (I have another one in the stash that will benefit...)

Thank you Tom and David. I've got one of these in the pile and lookforward to your notes being all over my Bench of Chaos sometime in the future!
Cheers!

"kit turret sides are symmetrical...nobody got it right (or even recognized the problem) until recently"

Define "recently". I discovered this issue and published it in a modelling magazine in 1994.

What!! You dug up a 9 1/2 yr old review just to criticize it?

See, you're making my point for me.
A decade is not "recently" .

I am curious, though, why you didn't state this in 2010 when you first commented on this thread?

Wouldn't it have been more relevant then?

Didn't read the review then.

But now I'm writing notes about the kit.

Next time I'll bury the review with a stake through its heart, to keep it from rising...

David, feel free to point out any of my blunders - my knowledge of Tigers wasn't anywhere near as advanced nine years ago. (And the field was a LOT less crowded then too - with only Tamiya, Dragon, Academy, and Italeri to choose from. Now it seems we can't move for another new Tiger from a new manufacturer! Shermans are going the same way these days...)

Tom, well done mate...you made this kit look great, I have the WOT (World of Tanks) Version kit of the same vehicle and vowed never to do another one as it was a pig of a thing to build with those vague instructions (as you said, reference material needed...!). Well done mate.
