Some Army units have modified their equipment to help them adjust to urban warfare. At least two battalions in the 4th Infantry Division have mounted .50 caliber heavy machine guns on the back of the pickup-truck version of their Humvees, vehicles sometimes used to carry infantry troops to raids. "Gun-vees," which resembles the "technicals" used by Somali fighters, are especially useful in battling guerrilla fighters in alleys and other tight urban spaces where tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles cannot maneuver.

Hmm any photos out there?

I saw that! The front page of the San Francisco Chronicle shows an M998 with an M2 mounted on a tripod and facing the rear. However, the M2's so high, there's almost no way the gunner can fire it level. More like at an AA angle instead.

Look in the background... a little fuzzy, yet discernible.

Our army has some of these. Mods are locally made most likely.

The second photo from the top in Kencelot's post is the photo I saw on the front page of my local newspaper. As I said, I've no idea how that gunner can fire the M2 when it sits that high.

It may be mounted high so they can easily engage snipers, etc. in the upper stories of buildings in an urban enviroment? If it was mounted lower it would be hard to engage a target across the street on say, the 8th floor. Just a thought.

I dont see a problem...the 50 cal looks like it would be approxmently level with the sholders of the soldier...Also long as its on a soild mount a 50 Call is fairly easy to move around and firew
