For one of my next builds, I'm looking for some info.
Does anyone know the differents between a DUKW used by the US army and one used by the British?
For instance, the holes in the sideplates, are they open or closed?
Open.

Closed.

Is it for both the same?

Color scheme?

Thanks.

Erikssson.

Hello Eric,

during WWII there were no visible differences. Most Dukws operated in American markings with British serials added. Few RASC DUKW which saw service in Sicily and Italy had a sand base coat with black camo stripes.

No DUKW used in WWII had the holes you refer to. These openings were added after the war due to experiences made during service. The sea water entered the hollows easily but they didn't dry well. So they became hotbeds for rust. The openings should help to get the hollows dry.

After the war the British changed the color of the Ducks to a blue/grey overall trim. Canvas part were left oliv drap or got the vehicle color.

The first pic of a vehicle painted so that i know is dated in 1952. The majority of the ducks in service with RCT and RASC don't show the openings in the formed plates. I know only one pic where you can see one vehicle in a group of fife which shows this holes.
Life preserving equippment was carried. E.g. lifebuoy and lifebelt stowed in the spare wheel.

One modification was carried out by the British after the war to extend the service time of the DUKW. During this program some were fitted with a diesel engine.

I hope that helps.

Happy modelling
Harald

Hi Piter
Do you mean stencils ? If so, Archer has released a set of DUKW instruments, placards and maintenance stencils
http://www.archertransfers.com/AR35243.html

These are 1/35th scale stencils but maybe they should be helpful anyway as patterns (Archer also makes stencil letterings in various sizes) ...

That would be illegal. You can not just scan the decals and send them to someone, it falls under copyright laws. Your friend or you could order and pay for the decals, then use them as a guide to make his decals though.

You are welcome. Closing the holes isn't a big deal. Thats quickly done.
Have you thought about using PE-Parts? This will enhence the kit pretty much!

The pics are taken from a book published long ago by iso publications. The title is DUKW 21/2 ton 6x6 Amphibian. It's the Dukw bible in my eyes.

I have to explain what was going on, I have written some short cuts.
My friend is based on the various documentations and photos of vehicles from the internet. The one found such inscriptions, but as I read it, I had doubts are they correct .
Therefore he needs to consult them with decals, that all .
I wrote him, do not worry , if l not help we'll buy this decals .
The first difference is white letters, and the vehicle has yellow. What color were used during the war ,both?
Once again, thank for help.

Hi Eric,

I built a couple of these when I started modelling again, great fun. I stil have to fill in the holes on mine!! One thing that is absent from the kit are the 2 fire extinguishers behind the seats.

https://armorama.kitmaker.net//features/970

The pictures aren't great but might help. Have fun.

Hoi Harald.
I'm going to use some PE.
I've already got the BIG ED set from Eduard.
Maybe I can still find that book is a second hand shop.

Hi Alan.
Your topic was fun to read.
The 2 fire extinguishers behind the seats are in the PE set I'm going to use.

Thanks guys.

Hi Erikssson,

BIG ED means "to use some PE"
Ok. I whish you good luke. I used Eduards set 35519 for my kit and i think i enhenced it pretty good. So i can't wait to see your project going on.
If you are unlucky finding the book drop me a pm.

Happy modelling
Harald
