I recently built a 1/72 model of a CJ-3a (a Willys MB painted Potomac Grey instead of Olive Drab) and am copying the prototype in the album I link to below;

While I’ve finished the model of the jeep, I’ve only managed to prep and prime the deer on the hood.
I was wondering if any of you had any tips for painting the brown fur on the deer. I’m thinking about painting the deer a lighter brown and then directionally “dry-brushing” a coat of darker brown on top of it, but this is just the best idea I can come up with on my own.
If any of you have a better idea, I’d definitely be interested to hear it.
Thank you in advance.

Sounds like you're headed in the right direction, Tyler.
Look at a few photos of whitetails to get a feel for what parts are what shades.

Floyd's on it. Maybe trip on down to book store and thumb through game hunting magazines and such. Taxidermist or hunting lodge nearby? Butcher? Colors usually depend on type and location,but not always.
Cool idea

I scratchbuild this one many moons ago
and painted it with oil colors.Oil colors allow for smooth transition between lighter and darker parts.
Looking at it right now i could have used a bit more reddish brown.
Cheers

Hi Tyler , If the deer is a whitetail, under the throat,belly,inside the legs and of course, the underside of the tail are white. I would paint the white first,then the brown blending it into the white. Her is a link to some whitetail photos.....Vince
