Hey, Jake
The long-defunct Verlinden Magazine had a how-to article on painting the pea pattern, but I can't find my copy. It was way back in Volume 1, which was from the early 1990s.
However, in 1993, when Francois Verlinden and Bob Letterman were still together, they published a soft-cover book entitled, "The System," Volume 1: Figure Painting. It cost me about $20 and it contains a how-to section on German camouflage uniforms. Although it's a tutorial using oils, I find that it works with acrylric, as well. They instruct you how-to paint the Splinter, Mottle and Winter camos. Nonetheless, they say it's the basically same process for all forms of camo.
They recommend beginning with the lightest color and working progressively darker. So, you need a good example of the pattern you're duplicating and the colors required.
Sorry I couldn't be more help, but it's a start.
Happy Modeling,
Randy

Have a look for Calvin Tan's Modelling Waffen-SS figures by Osprey Publishing, he covers it

p.s. I'd recommend not getting it through Amazon at the moment - I read on another figure site they want US$60 for the book!

I used this site for reference the first time I painted the Dot 44 pattern, the second link on the left - "camoflage uniforms". There's not a lot of photos but I found them useful.

How to paint Erbensmuster or Dot-44 camo pattern...

Hi Jake & Company

This is the first time I´ve painted a Dot-44 camo pattern... ... I am using the next two figures for the "Paint those troops campaign!", so... I wish this info can help all you...

After a little of "Research", this is what I think is a coherent painting sequence:

I.- I have primed my figures with Vallejo Chocolate Brown: I thought it is an adequate base colour for what I was intending to do in the next stages:

II.- Now I´ve made a mix of two parts of Vallejo Yellow Olive (70892 - 087) an one part of Vallejo Grey Green (70866 - 165): with this mixture I´ve painted the first "real" color of the uniform: I´ve painted completely the figures with this mixture. Let´s call this color "base green".

III.- Painting "Amoebas #1": I´ve elaborated a "medium green", with this mixture: four parts of Vallejo Yellow Olive (70892 - 087) plus one part of Vallejo Dark Yellow (70978): this way we get a lighter green, wich is painted in amoebas shapes over the "base green".

IV.- Painting "Amoebas #2": Directly with Vallejo German Camo Pale Brown (70825-144): we paint amoebas shapes over the "base green", but not over the "Amoebas #1"

V.- Painting "Amoebas #3": Directly with Vallejo German Camo Black Brown (70822-150), but not over the "Amoebas #1" or "Amoebas #2".

This is the basic shape of the amoebas: (in the photo you just can see only the Amoebas #2:

VI.- Paint small dots over the "base green" and over Amoebas #1 ; #2 and #3. Use this colors for the dots:

* Vallejo German Camo Pale Brown (70825-144)
* Vallejo German Camo Black Brown (70822-150)
* Vallejo Olive Green (70967-082)

Painting the small dots I´ve tried to follow this simple rule:

* Olive Green ONLY is painted over "base green" & "Amoebas #1".
* German Camo Black Brown ONLY is painted over "Amoebas #2"

I don´t know if I´ve made too much "historical mistakes", but I´ve enjoyed working with this camo scheme, and I (very modestly) like the results...

Amoebas distribution before dotting... an a figure painted after the dotting (I still need to correct the Flat Black mistake):

The figure with the dotting (I still need to correct the Flat Black mistake, but it will be very easy -I think-)

Warning: As you can see in the photos, I´ve made a mistake: I initially used Vallejo Flat Black instead of Vallejo German Camo Black Brown for the Amoebas #2... I don´t like the Flat Black looking... I´m going to "correct" that mistake.

Cheers, guys

Hi there!
Apart from what you mention about the issue with Flat black, I think you are doing a great job with that pattern.
Keep posting your progress.
Cheers.
Pablo.

thanks a bunch you have all been very helpful... any other insight would help. I am still wondering one thing though. Would it be better to use the beige color as the basecoat? it seems as if it is the most prevelent color in the camo. I have not even attempted this pattern yet and i am very new to modeling. All the help i can get is appreciated

Thanks
Jake

Windrow and Greene published a book "Waffen SS Uniforms in Colour Photographs" Europa Militaria #6.

This is an excellent reference for painting SS uniforms and I see that it is available on Amazon.
