Hi Guys,
After spending quite some time looking over visual referance on the M-1114 that I have found both here and elsewhere on the net (many thanks to those who have provided it) I was just mondering if it is safe to assume that no two cars in the field are the same?
It looks like most of the Hummers have 'Hillbilly' mods and customisation, Is this semi standard depending on the specific unit or is it done on individual crew basis?
I am asking this because I am wondering if some of the mods I want to add to mine will be OK or not (additional armaments for the gunner etc). I figure if I put the right standard equipment in it should be fine, however I am a bit iffy about some of the customisations. So many mods, not enough Hummer.

it would help if you would specify it a little bit further.
most field modifications are done at a unit level... some even at lower echelons...
It all depends on nation using the vehicles and the units flexibility in combat...

Most M1114s don't have any hillbilly armor at all. The M1114 is a factory-built armored vehicle. There are different levels of armoring that adds additional armor plates and different doors, but these are again factory-made pieces. They do have different locations of antenni, anti-IED devices, gear, etc. Usually these pieces are added at unit level and can vary in location greately.

What I mean is that with some of the cars they have M-240's as well as the M-2 / Mk-19 and some don't, also, the positioning of the weapon on either the left or the right of the main armament. Is this a specific unit thing or a crew personal preferance. Also some have shelves built onto the back turret armor to store ammo whereas others don't.

We had the opportunity to mount extra weapons on our turrets but did not. We decided to eschew the "cool guy" look for practicality. Two guns = two kinds of ammo, more space required, etc. Aside from that you can only effectively employ one weapons system at a time. If it's something you shouldn't be shooting at with the fi'ty, then it's time to kick doors in. If in rare cases it's something the fi'ty can't handle, we have AT4's and LAW's.
As for ammo storage, a lot is placed below and handed up by the window lickers as needed. We did employ various methods of storing it on the turret. Here you see one box at the right front. I removed one or two of the turret armor bolts and passed them through the ammo can. We later used a similar setup to store BA5590's for the Hellfighter.
This one shows a simple bracket welded from angle iron to store ammo boxes:
Hesco bastion material for storing AT4's:
And two ammo cans, again bolted on with existing armor bolts, to store AT4's: (same vehicle as second photo)

Thanks Robert, I appreciate the help. I certainly have a few options to chose from with quite a few aspects of how the final product comes out. I will most likely do a bit of a mish mash taking bits and ideas from all the different cars that I have seen. I figure that it is pretty canon considering they are all fielded ideas and not something I have made up. I will keep you updated as per the build and will most likely throw a few more questions your way.
On a more personal note:
Thanks also for your service to our freedom. As an ex service man, who got out of the Australian Army before the war on terror started, I salute and thank you and all other serviceman and women doing their bit in the war.

Where is the fuel filling point on the M-1114? I was looking over my Legend converson and there is a solid piece of PE over the normal point behind the right passenger door. Is it a mistake?

It's no mistake, there's a hinged armored cover that goes over the fuel filler.

Thanks Robert. Much appreciated. Next question I have is about the smoke grenade dischargers. I want to depict the mounts on mine either fired off completely or semi fired. Do all 4 dischargers on each mount fire in one go or individually in a particular sequence? If so, what is the sequence (as you look at it 2 o'clock / 4 o'clock / 8 o'clock / 10 o'clock)? Do all 4 mounts fire at the same time or are they controlled seperately (left front / left rear / right front / right rear)?
