I'm making a diorama; it's just going to be a simple diorama: One two story building with the Nazi flag hung like a banner (all torn up, of course) and just some ruins of buildings, hit by heavy artillery. I have no idea on how I'm going to make this. Oh, by the way, it's a diorama of a small village on the Russian Front, fall of '42. Anything will be helpful. Thanks for your time.

Hey MEBM
You need a dose of the same as what I got when I started out.
Go to Docs Dios for great advise and tips for a newbie. After 2 years of modelling, I still look in there for tips and inspiration. Great site. Read through the articles and it will give you a good idea of what you will need. Then when you start building you can ask specific questions on here! Good luck and welcome to armorama!!

I don' t have any real tips other then to go for it! You will soon work out what works and what don't. Perhaps you can start by picking your favourite dio piccie from a modelling mag and try producing the same.
While were at it I would be interested to hear ideas from you guy's on producing home made flags in 1/35 scale.

What's static grass and PVA glue? I hear about it so often, but I have no idea what it is. Thanks for your time.

Take a look at the diorama "Breakout" in the FEATURES->DIORMAS section here on Armorama. I did a similar setting (small burned/bombed ruin with tattered Nazi Flag)... may give you some ideas.

You must have a story !!!
Without a story, a diorama seems to be very boring.
And the basic rule is: Don't make a bulding parallel to the basic ground!
Have fun!

Just a quick response. First, my best advice is to (1) check the resources the others have referred you to and then (2) just dive in and get it started. The hardest part for me was overcoming the hesitation that it all seemed extremely hard and complicated. Here in the US, the most common white glue is Elmer's. There are many types of static grass, I have used Woodland Scenics purchased at a local model railroad shop. It comes in various shades, textures and in a shaker bottle (as well as smaller containers) and looks like tiny slivers. Static grass comes in many brands and should be available at most well stocked hobby shops.

Below is a fairly good link to a static grass application tutorial.

Hope it helps.
