how the hell do you paint them on 1/35 figures...the tiny vertical lines would be almost invisible at that scale, surely?

Hi mate!
They are pain in the back, aren't they?
This is how I paint them:
first step - three layers of ochre (first a bit darker, with some black paint, second pure ochre, third = ochre+white - highlights)
Second step - brown camo scheme. I paint the contour first trying to keep the lines as straight as possible and angles sharp without any round and smooth curves - it's just like drawing squeres and triangles next to each other. Then I fill the insides with brown.
Third step - green. Same as brown, just keep the green touching the brown as much as possible.
Last step: Let it rain, a day, a week, a year! (who knows where this line came from has a beer from me) - raindrop marks. Short, thin lines going downwards (in free state so be carefull with sleeves).
and the final result:
Hope it will help you with your figures.
Andrzej

Well, I painted splinter in 120mm and the "rain marks" would be almost invisible in that scale as well... I did overexaggerate them a bit as I wanted to see them on the finished figure. BTW, here is the figure:

I would suggest to try painting the rain marks on 1/35 figure as well. Try it with a very fine brush and if you feel the streaks are too thick or wide you can always make them thiner using the uniform pattern color. I "saved" number of too wide rain marks that way. It is time consuming and nerve wrecking, but I feel it was worth it in the end.
The other option could be a custom made decal with thin stripes, but I didn't want to go that far.

To be honest I hate decals even on flat surfaces... I don't even want to think about placing decal on figure.

I've not tried it but I've been told that a fine green pen is one of the best ways to get the rain lines. So far I've left the lines off as they really would be invisible at this scale but I still feel like I've cheated by not doing them.

Mario,
Congrats, that figure looks excellent. Can you tell me specifically what colours you used for the zeltbahn, I am having real trouble matching the colours.
My first attempt (using the Jaume Ortiz method) is here https://armorama.kitmaker.net/forums/155131#1300388 but I want to do the "green" version of the smock.
Any help would be much appreciated,
Andy

Andy, please shoot me a PM as I'll have to find the "secret recipe" for the splinter on my home PC. BTW, I started painting another figure which will sport Luftwaffe splinter camouflage but haven't started mixing the colors yet. I also wanted to make a greenish version on that one.
Cheers,
Mario
