Hi Richard,
quite a while ago, I read an article in a German Magazine, a guy build there a scene from Orwell`s War of the Worlds, despicting the "Thunderchild" battleship firing upon a Martian Warmachine. He used Polyurethane foam, as used for insulating buildings. He sprayed the explosion cloud roughly, shaped it with a knife and painted it with acrylics. Perhaps this info helps.

Hi Richard,
try out this site: http://www.ediorama.com/xe/spg
On the left side you find a Navigation list with some cool Dios especially with these companys Material but you can use something different. I think you will find very good examples for what you need. The lunching Missle dio, Attacked tank dio or the Explosion dio are something for you. You can take cotton wool and spray some glue all over it so it´s more compact. Then some good painting and you will have a nice explosion.
Hope it helps
Stefan

I have never seen a convincing explosion in a diorama, because the the available materials are all too solid. An explosion is a dynamic event, and consists of hot gasses and bits of flying debris (i.e. mostly nothing at all). Most attempts end up looking like giant mutant mushrooms. An explosion, even one captured on high speed film, looks like a blur, and I how do you model "blur?"
Best advice, in my opinion, is to depict the aftermath, not the explosion itself.
