For one part in my diorama iam going to have a destroyed cargo truck. I think iam going to go with someRPG damage. The cargo in the back is going to be fuel drums. Here's what I want to add.

First one question about the fuel drums. If one was shot, and filled with diesel fuel, would it explode like it does in the movies?

Second thing, I can I create gasoline in a diorama coming out of a fuel drum or leaking onto the ground.?

Last question is, how should I go about making an oil spil underneath the truck? Black paint, and put a gloss coat over it?

thanks,
Mike

Hello Armor,
Hope I can help you out a lttle here....
#1. Diesel drums don' really explode as diesel fuel isn't as combusable as say, gasoline, but once it starts to burn...oh boy.
#2. If you want just bullet holes in the drums, make holes in the drum ( heated needle or fine drill bit ) stretch out some sprue ( like making antennas) and attach to the holes. Once panted they look pretty good.
#3. A nice pool of gloss black mixed with a little gun metal, and a little Future floor polis when dry, and voila. Instant fuel spill.
Hope this helps.

Gasolline is very volatile, it will either burn very quickly or evaporate very quickly. Oil, as in motor oil, is very viscous. Glossy black for a fresh spill and grimy black for an old spill shoud do the triuck. Actually, a fresh spill would likely look more like Tamiya Smoke than anything else.

as i know if you shot diesel drum it did not explode. diesel is slow burning and produce lot of black smoke (try using cotton airbrush black)
for creating gasoline leaking from drum look in digital diamonds, i think there it is.

Yes - there is a DIGITAL DIAMOND (#1 as I recall) that shows how I make "leaking oil".... basically, you can use fishing line or thin plastic sprue or strip, painted with a gloss enamel... add just a touch of thinned silver to the surface if you want it "floating" on water, as in a stream. You can also see this technique if you look closely at the corner of the hotel building in the diorama "Caen'44"... which just happens to be the all-time #1 viewed article on this website!

Both the Digital Diamond and the Caen dio can be found on the FEATURES button link. Digital Diamonds is a series I contribute, and the Caen Dio has a link in the "Hall of Fame" section.
