Would like to share pictures of recently completed Hobby Boss Super Sherman T-26E4 Pilot 1:

Built out of box, thanks to no interior hatch option - entire engine compartment went straight into my parts box (I couldn't imagine situation where tank would be buttoned up with engine hatches wide open). Painted with Tamiya paints, weathered with oil wash, Future mixed mud, Tamiya buff dust spray with final Humbrol thinned wash.

This is my first Hobby Boss model built - I may be imagining things, but felt that styrene maybe a little more brittle that other models when cemented... I find that this kit had a number of particular quirks that I'll need to account when building future offerings from Hobby Boss - which are no fault of manufacturer necessarily, but may just be my building process.

Hey Ivan,
Good work on your Pershing !!
Just got this kit the other day and was impressed with the detail.
I've read that the the back of the "wing" armour needs to be replaced or filled in.
What's your opinion on that?
Cheers

I built it straight out of the box - I can't vouch for accuracy, even though I did re-read Belton Cooper's account for this vehicle in "Death Traps" prior to building it (more of an inspiration, less of a technical insight).

The kit assembles very fast - if you skip the engine... If I were building it again, I'd probably mess around with add-ons, stowage and improving detail (but I got too impatient to paint).

Have a good build with yours!

Looks great Ivan! Interesting to compare it to the Accurate Armor Conversion set. I'm currently building (well, weathering actually) the Super Pershing for the tank overhaul campaign. One thing that pops out is the armored cover for the hydraulic counter balance cylinders is a lot higher and thicker on the HB offering. Also the cylinders themselves look thinner than on the AA offering.

The track looks good, is it single link or rubber band?

Cheers!
Stefan

EDIT: One more remark: Cooper hat black bands of Cammo added. Are they just not that visible or did you leave them off? Cheers!

The hollow backs of the "bat wing" armor indeed should be filled as these were flame cut pieces of armor plate that were just welded to the T26E4 manlet. Also all builders should be aware that the white "2" and "A" on the tank were definitely post-war markings -- added after the cessation of hostilities. Photos also show this tank to be clearly painted with the black camo like other 3AD tanks.

I heard the front plate was actually from a Panther, so that one definately needs to be filled in. I also filled in the wings. I cannot imagine why they would weld on hollow ones

Hey, Stefan

I built this tank straight from the instruction booklet - I've missed the black camo bit Tracks are individual link

Oh, and for the wing armor - the front certainly represents two armor plates welded together, I will certainly be filling them in on my future build (aka, sequel). I also imagine some additional weld seams, torch cut edges are in order.

Anybody got a color plate handy of what black camo looked like? I admit to being a bit of a dud when it comes to US/Brit armor (but I'm learning). Big thanks in advance!

Thanks Roy,
It does look odd being hollow.
I wonder why Hobby Boss got that so wrong while did such a good on the rest of the kit ?
Cheers

When S Zaloga built his, he included lots of pics of the T26E4 in the depot after the war. They are all included in his Milmod online article. Move your cursor below the texts that "pic 8" and that will bring up the other pics.

looking at images in hunnicut's Pershing book, and having a few questions answered on ML, I am doing my build this way. I removed the round vents on the sponson box covers. I am using the short travel lock. I will be representing the image f the vehicle "before" the bat wings were added.

Carl: according to B Cooper, once they added the nose armor and the mantlet slab, they took the T26E4 out for trials. The immediately found the mantlet threw out the balance of the gun. They drove it back into the work area and added the "bat wing" armor which solved the imbalance. Funny thing is a photo of this configuration exists in the Sq/Signal book. However, know that it only was like this for a few hours of its life.

Hobbyboss have released a new one calling it "Pilot #2".. how is this different than this kit. Which was actually used in the field? I want to decide which one I should get.

Only pilot #1 saw combat. Pilot #2 stayed in the USA and production T26E4s were patterned after it. The turret rear counter weight was different I know.

Hobby Boss also makes the production version of the T26E4:

They certainly have the Pershing variants covered.
Let's hope they do the T23, T25 and T26 prototypes, especially the ones that got into limited production.
Cheers

With one exception - the T26E3 WW2 variant - Only DMl ever did the correct WW2 variant.

Hey Al,
Does HobbyBoss actually make a T26E3 variant or is it a M26 variant ?
I can't recall seeing a review for the T26E3 version.

Pilot 2 had the springs on the outside, and an oval loader's hatch. Production vehicles had a better interior equilibrator, so no external springs.
Also, looking at pilot #1, the shorter travel lock was on the one I am doing.
@ Roy, I want to do the one from that brief moment in time.

Wow that looks awesome. I like the dirt and dust weathering, very realistic.
