Hi Guys this is my first post on this forum, after reading all the interesting stuff on here I decided to become a member.
I'm busy with my late King Tiger(DML)and have cleaned up most of the individual tracks, but now I'm getting to the serious part... I dont know which markings would be appropriate for a KT with the single link track and no zimmerit. Could you guys please point me in a direction.
I've got Tiger in Combat as a reference.
Thanks

Hi, there were very few KTs with single tracks and without zimmerit (march '45 production). There are very few pictures of those vehicles. I think I have just one (no turret number visible) and IMHO the safe thing is only the balkenrauz. Most of late KT's can be seen with standard tw

Thanks for the reply, ok so what are my options?
would there be single track link tigers with zimmerit? in which case I can just get an aftermarjet zimmerit set.
or
get the double link or transport set?

What are your options? I assume you have the Ardennse Offensive KT set with volksgrenadier figures (the single link tracks are delivered only with this kit). By changing the tracks and / or adding the zimmerit and paying attention to some smaller details (it depends how much accurate you want to be) you can model every production Turret KT. Some KTs from the pz abt 506th during the Ardennes offensive where testing those single link tracks (that's why DML created this kit). From two photos avaialble (ok one for sure) we can suppose that those vehilces wer covered with zimmerit.

Here's the one from the box art

We can't say for sure if it was zimmeritted or not but I think it might have been. Other pictures form Ardennes show a wreckage of a zimmeritted KT with single links tracks.

There are better prints of this photo available, but even this Internet version shows pretty clearly where the Zimmerit has spalled off the surface, probably due to an internal fire. The tanks with the new track were delivered to the 506th from a test batch built in September, 1944, shortly before the coating was discontinued (most of the battalion's tanks had the standard tracks and sprocket). The tests were deemed successful, but it was necessary to use up existing stocks of the old tracks and sprockets, so the new track doesn't reappear on the production line until March, 1945.
The kit's decals are for these early tanks, and these should not have the rain guard over the gunsight on the turret front, so shave that off the Dragon part.
The very late tanks did have this feature, as well as ribbed reinforcements on the curved front mudguards. Late tanks also had the fuel tank vent lines on the rear sides. And of course, no Zimmerit on the 1945 tanks.

Good day, sorry to barge in on this thread but I'm building a DML KT w/ zimmerit also and noticed that part#8 from sprue O seems to have what looks like a rain gutter on one side. The instructions for attachment of this part seems to be reversed, I've studied some pictures of the bovington KT and other vintage pictures including a well-known frontal shot of the turret of a KT in Budapest and they all seem to indicate that the DML instructions are wrong. Could you help me out on this?
