When ammo was stored in wooden crates (in this case 76.2 mm for M10) was it, or could it, be stored in their fibreboard cylinders and then packed into the boxes? Or would this be considered a waste of resources and only be packed one way or the other? I wish to have a US M10 crew reloading and would like to know if the ammo was packed in this way.

AFAIK, both were used together : the fiberboard tubes were packed in the wooden crates (2 per crate), just as for the 75mm shells ...

Frenchy is right. The ammo was first stored in the fiberboard tubes -- this protected the shell casing from dirt and excess moisture. The black fiber tubes were then shipped in wooden crates.
