Gents,

Hope you don't mind all the questions, as I build my Leo 2, I suspect I'll have a bunch. Anyway, I have the Tankograd book on our tank and I was wondering, if I wanted to swap out the 7.62mm MG3 machine gun with our 7.62 GPMG, does anyone make the GPMG in 1/35 scale, or am I scratch building it? Also, who makes the glow/chem stick bottles to be attached to the radio antenna?

Thanks all, I'll see if I can get my camera working.

Hobby Fan has a Modern U.S. Figure Accessory Set that includes an M240B....good enough to represent a C6.

Just be aware that changing the machine gun also means changing the entire mount on the loader's hatch ring. You would need the proper cradle and ammunition box from a Canadian Leopard. The only source for that is Maple Leaf Models.

Accurate Armour makes clear water bottles as an accessory item.

Talking about Canadian 2A6Ms, did all the fleet go to A-Stan or did a couple make it back to Canada from Germany for training etc.?
Could one build a Canadian 2A6M, without SLAT etc., a plain regular ?

Cheers

The Dragon Modern Machine Gun set has at least 2 GPMGs in it.

Hi,

According to my refs, the 20 Leo 2A6M CAN MBT that we leased and received from Germany were first modified to canadian standards and then went to A-Stan. I suppose you could build a Leo 2A6M without the slat armour, but I believe all 20 tanks had the armour as well as the Barracuda Camo.

Currently the only fully operational Canadian Leopard 2s are in Afghanistan. The Squadrons rotating over do their work up training in Canada and the US on the Leopard C2. They then go over to Germany to do conversion training on German Leopard 2A6Ms.

There are no Leopard 2A6Ms of any type in Canada....there are only a bunch of ex-Dutch Leopard 2A4 NLs in Canada awaiting upgrades and conversion to the Canadian Leopard 2A4 standard.

The only way to build a Canadian Leopard 2A6M CAN version without the slat armour is to depict it as they rolled off the aircraft in Afghanistan in August 2007. They had all the welded slat armour mounts attached to the hull and turret. The bolted on slat armour support arms were attached to the turret but not the hull. None of the slat sections were not mounted....this was due to transport in the aircraft and the slat sections were mounted before going operational.

You can do a photo search for "Leopard" on the Canadian Forces Combat Camera and find images of the Leopard 2A6M CANs arriving in Afghanistan with the details I explained.

That is a very good set but is it still in production?

The GPMG included in that set is the L7A2....close enough to a C6.

I just checked Dragon USA and it's not listed, so I thought it maybe was OOP? The kit's number is listed as 3806 and there are kits numbered either side of that so...

Gents,

More questions. I am at the point where I am working on the side skirts (correct name) and is it easier to install them to the model now or after the running gear is painted and the road wheels are installed?

TIA

Put them on after you've built the running gear and mounted the tracks. Just mask off the wheels etc, when you paint the rest of the tank and sideskirts

Gents,

What is the purpose of the gap between the main turret and parts 33 and 34? The gap tapers front to back. I assuming it's armour, but why the gap and why do these two parts swing/pivot?

TIA

The armor has to move out of the way to pull the engine.

Hi,

I thought the engine was in the rear? I am talking about the sides of the turret.

The turret gets turned 90 degrees and the covers are opened for engine removal.

Hey Rick, BTW, did Tamiya get the two front tow hooks wrong? The hook bends up and most photos that I have of the front of the tank show the hooks bending down. Unfortunately they are already installed.

From what i've seen in photos, the throat of the hook is supposed to be up.

Or missing LOL.

I agree with Rick but I've often see the rear hooks reversed on Leo 1 and 2. Too bad it's usually molded as one piece.

Ok Gents, It's my Leo2 question of the week time. This time it's a technical question and it's regarding the Peri-R17A2 scope, and I am wondering why the glass portion is angled and not square when you look at it head on?

TIA

Brad
