Hello everyone out there in ArmoramA land! This is my first post and first thread so here goes.
This is my T72 with ERA that I completed sometime last year. I think it's the Zvezda kit if I remember correctly! Let's just say I watched "9th Company" one too many times and had to model an Afghan era T72!
I tried to paint this one as realistically as possible. I don't like doing highlights so much at the moment. Well not in the traditional way anyway (dry brushing or highlighting edges). For this one I used a 3 tone paint shade and highlight method. Darkest shade on the undersides of things, so under the glacis plate of the lower hull, under the turret ring and the overhanging part of the track, a mid-level shade for the sides of the hull and turret and the standard colour on the upper surfaces.
Combine that technique with weathering effects, using weathering pigments etc and also toning the paint itself using dry brushing on the upper surfaces to give a multi toned finish to the paintwork.
Any way! If there's any questions I'll try to give an informative/informed response!
Thanks for looking,

Tom

Great looking model! The DML/Zvezda T-72B is a real dog of a kit but you made a nice looking model out of it. I think the paint finish is pretty much spot on and looks very good, it doesnt look too monotone and has a good bit of color variation.

About the only thing I can correct you on is that T-72's werent used in Afghanistan, the tanks in 9th Company (awesome movie!) were T-64's.

Hi there,
Thanks for the kind words! You're right, the Zvezda kit isn't the most accurate kit out there, but isn't too bad with a little bit of work and a reasonable paint job. It was the first modern armour piece that I did so I went for a cheaper kit to start on, I'd previously only done WW2 vehicles.
Thanks for the historical advice I will certainly take that into account!
I'm currently working on the Tamiya M1025 Humvee, I'll no doubt post up some pictures whenever it's finished.
Regards

Tom
