I scored some Florian Geyer Cav figures from Dragon today. The two guys on the horses. Its really cool because I read about them in my book, SS Hell on the Eastern Front. My questions are:
1. Did the 8th SS Florian Geyer exist at Kursk and take part? Or where they cease to exist by then.
2. Did they have any armor, that I could put the guys on horses next to a tank from their division?
3. Did they have any artillery battalions? Or any artillery at all?
Thanks!
~Chip

Hi. As far as I can tell from the information I have, this division was mainly a cavalry unit, and was basically never changed from such. And I can find no where that is mentioned that they served in any part of the Kursk battles. Mostly used in anti-partisan stuff, with spells in the front line.
Later on they did have an assault gun battalion, though it was never fully formed. But there is no information I can find that says anything about tanks being connected with this outfit. Tigers, Panthers, Pz. IVs and such. You could put these folks next to a StuG. III or IV in a late-war setting. Would highly doubt if any of these vehicles that were connected with this division ever were marked with this division's symbol this late in the war.
Or being a cavalry set up, they could have been used, when quite close to the front, as messengers too. Think I saw a photo once of a horseman delivering a message to the commander of a Hummel vehicle. So just maybe this would be accurate representation of sorts as well.
Take care, sgirty

Thanks for the information. I understand that they were stuck in Budapest with the 22 SS Maria Teresa (I think that was 22) when the soviets encircled it. Totenkopf was called into help break them out.
Anyway So I could do a little diorama of a capture partisan and the man on the horse.
Thanks again!

Sorry, no StuG III's or IV's in Florian Geyer. They were issued 29 Hetzers, possibly in lieu of these vehicles.
