Gents,
I was just wondering if there was a difference in the two kits. I've seen both Italeri kits (on Ebay) but with diferent box art and number codes as #248 and #6248. Was the latter a retooling of the previous kit? Is one better than the other?
Thanks,
Chris

Welcome to Armorama Chris
I'm sure it's the same kit in both cases.

Just like Italeri kits 217 Pz.Kpfw. IV ausf F1/F1/G and 6217 Pz.Kpfw. IV ausf. F1/F2, they're the same kit, they com with the same parts, the only difference are the markings and the instructions, kit 6217's assembly guide doesn't mention the "G" version and, obviously, no decals for that. Maybe the kit 6248 albeit same parts, have a different decal sheet. Best regards.

Thanks for the welcome and reply's. Both boxes seem to have decal sets for U.S., U.N., German, & Italy. Maybe just updated instructions and new box art like you said. I'll give it a try anyway. I've seen that Eduard makes a PE fret for the M-107, & there is a metal barrel from barrel depot (#35046) but are there track sets from AFV club? I've seen the ones for the 108 & 109. Would they be the same tracks for the M110, and do they make any? Any decal company's make unit decals for this model? Any other suggestions would be well appreciated. Also, I'm looking for a good book on Vietnam Armor/ Artillery with unit specific's, ie. Armor companys and equipment especially ACAV and the likes. I have the "Armor in Vietnam" by Jim Mesko and he suggests the "Mounted Combat in Vietnam" studies book but I'm unsure about the contents, if anyone could shed some light.
Thanks,
Chris

Chris

There is a metal barrel from barrel depot and on this kit it is worth it. There is (or was) a PE set from Eduard. If not see if they have the M110 set as many items are the same. As for tracks, no, there is an OOP resin set but that is it. Verlindin made an ammunition set which is also OOP but in ebay at times.
Hope that helps

Chris: MecModels make some really good Vietnam era decals and there are M107 markings on one or two sheets. I've used their products on a few kits and the decals are VERY thin and look "painted on" when dry. Customer service is really good too.

Others have responded to the question about tracks (SP Design).
There is also a set with Diehl tracks, but maybe these are only for german vehicles. Perfect Scale Modellbau does very nice castings so there
is no worries on that score.

Actually there is a difference between the old and the new boxing. In newer kit Italeri used slightly softer vinyl for tracks, so they are a bit more useable than the very stiff old ones. They are still not as flexible as they should be, but not as bad as the old ones either.

Thanks Guys,
Frenchy as always......you come thru! Robin as I am just getting back into modeling and into AFV I don't know if those particular tracks are appropriate for Vietnam era? Maybe someone else would know, but they do look very well from the pics. Also $12 for the SP tracks is within my cost range vs. the cost of the others.
On another note:
I've recently found out about "Archer" decals and was wondering which sets would be appropriate for Vietnam era stuff. I've seen some for the 105mm and 155mm rounds and some interior and exterior data and such. Anyone have any knowledge on these decal sets?
Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,
The SP tracks are the ones for the Vietnam period.
What's this about Archer 155mm transfers? I've got a lot of 155mm ammo that needs decals!
Joe.

Archer has a whole line of ammo box stencils in both dry transfer and water-slide decals. They have a couple of105mm ammo box sets, but I haven't seen a 155mm one.
105mm Smoke crate stencils, dry transfer.
105mm HE crate stencils, dry transfer
105mm Smoke and HE stencils, water-slide.

Gino
Be careful even though those are 105mm stencils some of them are WWII era markings and not VN or modern markings,
With that said, everone is missing the point.....the M107 is 175mm not 155mm so the 155mm ammunition would be incorrect,
Verkinden made a 175mm ammunition set with decals which is OOP but shows up on ebay every now and then.
As far as the choice of ammunition.....the 175mm was strictly HE only....no smoke...no illum.
And yes the SP tracks are correct. The US M107 used the same tracks from it's inception until it was take out of service in the late 70s.

You are correct, of course on the caliber of the M107. I didn't read that he wanted to use the Archer decals with it. I thought he was just asking about them.

Mike, Gino and Guys,
Thanks for the info! Yes, the M107 is a 175mm, I was just asking about the Archer decals on a side note, sorry for not clarifying. Also my mistake on the 155mm round decals. I'm working on both models , Italeri 105mm & 155mm Howitzers and added 155mm by error. But the info on the other decals is greatly appreciated, as well as on the tracks. You guys are an encyclodeia of military knowledge!
Thanks,
Chris

just a small note about ammo dates and usage. My unit shot late 1944 and 1945 155 ammo in 1968, but it was pretty much nonexistent by the end of Febuary. It all pretty much came out of San Fransico. We shot a lot of Korean war vintage stuff up to late may or early June (early fifties), and by August it was all fairly new stuff. I suspect the same may hold true for eight inch stuff. All the 105 stuff I ever shot in the states was current manufacturer as well as 175mm rounds. Cannot remember the dates much on WP, but do remember illumination rounds being fairly recent. Remember nothing about powder lots and dates to speak of.
We used to joke about shooting war surplus ammo!
