Hi all
Am I right in assuming that the m42 duster turret is basically a twin Bofors setup and that a couple of sets of 40mm Bofors metal barrels will work as replacements.
also are the afv club M41 track suitable to replace the kit ones
cheers

Yes. I got a pair of turned barrells from a german company who make mostly items for ships. I think this was their only 1/35 product. Can´t remember their name now, but if you PM me I´ll check it out.
And yes again. The tracks are the same. The AFV Club indy tracks are probably the best set Ive ever used. The metal parts fall together so easily and can be weathered like metal, and then the black pads added afterwards. Normal cement does not work for them. AFV Club also have a running gear set with wheels/sprockets/idlers/rollers, where you get get a resin plate to replace the Tamiya details that muct be cut off first.

Hi Keith. I´ll post here incase others are interested.
As Im at work now, I took this info from my mail account
40mm/60 Bofors M2A1 Gun barrels 1:35 [02035US40B]
https://shop.modellmarine.de/product_info.php?products_id=685&osCsid=9e2296d79b66dd2390228cf0d6835a8a
It cost €10.00 and postage was €3.30 to Sweden(Shipping to SE : 0.02lbs), when I filled out all the formulas (toal €13.30). Pretty decent delivery time as well.
PayPal-adress is [email protected]
You can send him a mail to the same address and ask about availability. He writes pretty good english.
All the best

I have a question, if I may..
I saw on Hobby Search that Tamiya will be re-releasing their Duster, and I've been wanting to build one for a long time.. as a vehicle in the Lebanese civil war.. Anyway, just how bad is this kit? I mean, I really just want something that looks the part and doesn't look like a toy. Is Tamiya's Duster a "reasonably" good kit?
If anyone's interested

Wouldn't it be great if Tamiya are re-releasing it because they heard something about the AFV Club Duster becoming a reality? I dream...

If so, Id recommend waiting for the AFV Club. A fellow modeller who is in contact with these companies advised me that AFVC are working on this. To fix up Tamiyas kit to modern standards will cost a lot of time and money. All small details like lift rings are molded solid and most of everything else is rather soft in detail. I was lucky enough to get the kit and etch for a bargain price, but Ive paid out at least a new kit price for running gear, tracks, barrels, tow rope and ammo sets (2 x Azimut and 1 x Lion Roar). Havent started mines yet as Im trying to finish some projects and know this will take a lot of time and effort.

Hisham,
Thanks for the link! Looking at the images this is indeed the very same kit I built way back in the late 1970s, with no improvements. That means the tools are moulded onto the hull, the tracks have no detail on the insides, and the hull has big slots in it for the motorisation kit. To make it look good even from a distance you will have to do a fair bit of work, and that's assuming we're not worried about hull dimensions or the accuracy of the turret interior.
If I see one going very cheap (under £10) I might be tempted, but otherwise I'll wait for the AFC Club version. (Last one I saw was at the MAFVA Nationals in June, on the Bring & Buy stall of second-hand stuff, and they wanted an unrealistic £28 for it...)

Thanks for the advice, guys. It's just that after waiting for so long for the AFV Club Duster, I figured the Tamiya kit was going to be the only game in town, at least for a while.
I sure hope this re-release was caused by some inside info on the AFV kit!

I believe the AFV club one has been on the cards for ages, and the Tamiya one is currently the only game in town.
although take a look here to get an idea of the work required to build a decent M42 Duster
cheers

Its been announced as a future kit much longer than that. More like 10 years. I wouldn't hold my breath.
The old Tamiya kit cam be made into a nice model though. It just takes some TLC. I too made a super-detailed version by replacing the running gear and track with the AFV Club versions, and also added lots of sheet stryrene, rod, etc., etc., etc.
I think it came out pretty good...
...and so did Mr. Tamiya.
Sorry, no in-progress pics. This was way before I had a digital camera.

Nice looking model, Gino. And the one in the link that Keith posted almost looks like it was totally scratchbuilt!
I'm afraid I don't have the necessary skills, nor the research material to fix the kit up like that. I can only wait in hope that AFV Club just postponed it for some reason. I don't understand why they would totally cancel a project they had already started.

10 years?!! Oh boy, that is a long time!
So, what about a resin kit? Is there one available on the market?
And is there really a massive amount of work to do on the Tamiya kit (which I have in my stash) & can anybody point me in the right direction to some sort of guide as to what needs to be done to it, please?
Thanks fellas.
Joe.

Check out the link posted by Keith above and you'll see how much needs to be done to make it look good. Even if you do half of that, it'll still be a lot of work.

Its not that bad and doesn't really need all that work to look good. At a minimum, you should replace the tracks with the AFV Club ones (either rubber band or indi-link, both are nice); and the road wheels, sprockets, and idler wheels with ones from the AFV Club M41 Running Gear set. The rest are small upgrades with sheet or rod styrene that are mainly detailing extras. You can choose how much to add or not. Don't be scared of a little scratch-building. Once you get started, you will find it is not that hard, esp. when adding small deatils that can go a long way toward the appearance of the overall vehicle.

Another alternative is that I can buy a re-released Tamiya kit and lots of AM goodies, thus ensuring AFV Club release their new model almost immediately after!

Hi Tom ... read my post. If that were true, it would already be released.
I checked the "modellmarine.de" webshop that I posted in a previous thread earlier today, and there doesn´t appear to be any 1/35 barrells left. Maybe you should send him a mail Keith?

I, too, checked out that modellmarine.de & found they had no barrels. Keith, mabye you could try a little arm-bending & tell the guy that he has a queue of people here waiting for a set of twin 40mm Bofors from him! Please? Or are there any alternative manufacturers?
Okay, so I've got track replacements (metal Friulmodel M41 tracks, I think), AFV Club replacement wheel & sprocket set & a set of Eduard PE. Ammunition is a mixture of Lionroar & Armorscale 40mm US AA ammo. So, all this replacing of the original kit parts will knock up into a pretty good model, will it?
And if, for arguments sake, I managed to get hold of a nice pair of metal barrels from the aforementioned website, what about the flash suppressors that were fitted to some Dusters as seen in much photographic? What would be the best way of making those?
Sorry Keith, BTW, for hijacking your thread. I hope you dont mind but I find this a very interesting subject as the Army used this vehicle during the street fighting at Hue helping the Marines to defeat the NVA with pretty impressive results.

Check on E-Bay for the barrels. I just picked up two for $14.00 and that includes postage. Good luck.

Thanks.

You have 2 choices ... take the easy way out and not have them ... many didn´t ... or the hard way ... well I don´t imagine it being too hard ... my plan is to use some "T" profile plastic lengths of a suitable size and shaped accordingly. Wrapping some soft metal thread around them then to complete.

Thanks Frank. Not a bad idea at all. I'm going to have to go the hard way because I think the barrels look way cooler with the flash suppressors fitted. Just my opinion.
