If there was any "PC" thought in Tamiya's change from action box covers to their current style, the "PC" stood for "Particularly Cheap."
Think about it, DML/Dragon continues action box art. Their first jagdtiger suggests a massive head shot on one of the soldiers next to the beast.
Tamiya, after all, are the same people who keep rereleasing 35 year old kits with no upgrades or evencorrectoipns to their horrible two handled jerry cans and muddy figures. How much cheaper to have an illustrator simply do a vehicle with the figures from the kit and minimal need for background, perspective, etc? They are also the same people who for years marketed their XF-21 Flat Base with the same usage directions as their paint.
Consider also Hasegawa who used excellent illustrations on their box art , so good, it was compiled in a book by the Japanese artist, only to replace this with a photo of the built up kit.

@ Peter: Nice one! But the question now is that having touched it, will you ever wash your hands again ?

This was my second favorite Tamiya box art. I like the 1980s action.

I LOVE old model boxes (I also collect antiques)!!!! For Tamiya I really like their figure pack art, all the different sizes and poses. But for kits I like their old Stug III one, with the German officers superimposed in front. Their British Eighth Army box is really cool - reminds me of the old Action Man boxes - which I also collect!
