MH: Your diorama looks great. I was beginning to wonder if anybody had ever used Woodland Scenics snow products. I bought some of the different snow types from this line and I now look forward to using them.

thanks everyone for the great response to my snow diorama. i noticed one of the photo links is broken so here is the missing pic, also a shot of some of the figures you can't see easily (ie. the half track crew) and a photoshop'd scene i made but never posted here:

cheers, mh.

hi Stanley, the shrubs are just small flowered weeds i found in my field. they were picked last autumn one day when i was bring in the horses and saw they were a nice scale for a diorama. i dried them inside and then de-flowered them by crushing the little petals with my fingers... they crumbled away.

when the base plaster was 2/3 dried i put white glue on the shrub stems and gently pushed them into the plaster, the material was still soft enough i did not have to drill millions of tiny holes.

i have a large bag of them but i think it would break 20 federal laws for me to mail noxious weeds to modelers around the world cheers, mh

thanks for the kind words vonMarshall, i got up the nerve and entered this diorama in a local armour show and got a bronze in the Advanced Diorama Category. learned a lot about what the judges look out for and saw some great works by many local modelers.

i am not into the competition side of the hobby but i was very pleased to receive insightful critical feedback from the judges that i can apply to future projects.

thanks once again and happy modeling. cheers, bd.

That's absolutely fantastic painting and weathering and model building and everything! This diorama is amazing! I like the figure of one of the crew carrying the wounded soldier and also the Photoshopped image. It looks as real as anything! I would love to see more of your dioramas and models. Keep up the great work!

Excellent diorama. So many big dioramas feel cramped and disjointed but the figure groupings and vehicle placement makes this one work really well! There's a sense of movement but a logic to where everyone and everything is. Nicely done.

What did you use for snow? Did you use anything to make it look, well, sorta melty?

thanks guys for the kind words, this diorama was my first attempt at some new paint techniques as well as the snow.

for the snow i used Woodland Scenics "Snow - Soft Flake" (SN140) which was mixed with white glue and water in a small cup (the kind nurses use to hand out meds and no the meds were not for me haha). i then used a palette knife to scoop out the thick parts leaving as much of the water/glue in the cup. i then spread it around.

i got a lot of questions on the snow so for my new diorama "Red Rain" i hope to put together a step-by-step for using this technique for groundwork as well as putting snow on tracks and roadwheels.

hope this helps. cheers, bd.
