I just read an article in the 18 August 2003 Army Times entitled, "Convoy 'war wagons' under construction in Kuwait."
The article describes how Anniston Army Depot workers are in Kuwait building 'war wagons' out of the hull of M113 Armored Personnel Carriers by fitting them in the bed of 5 ton trucks. The vehicle will be equipped with two .50 caliber machine guns and additional armor. They are dubbing the vehicle the "Alabama Slammer" and say they should start hitting the field in the next month.
Does this conversion sound familiar? I bet they are using the 900-series 5 tons since the FMTVs ride too high.
Hmm, when's Gunnie going to have one built?

It's about time that they bring back the only proper solution to convoy security. But They will find out like we did in Vietnam that the the soft skin of the APC's will in no way stop an RPG round. The old double walled steel "Box" gun trucks would stop the rounds. I hope that they take this into consideration and help to protect the crew a little better.

In general,this is the only way to go.I would bet they'll put some kind of internal spaced armor inside the 113 hulk.and just load it to the brim with ammo.

Wow!....this 'new' idea is absolutely thrilling/fascinating to me! As are the questions brought up by the group.
Here's a few more;
A) In an RPG 'rich' environment, are open-topped vehicles even plausible in modern warfare???
B) Given the inevitable (smart) answer to the above, will the new GT's have enclosed turrets?
C) Additionally, are tyre's the best contact material between ground and machine that we can think of?
D) Is Malt-O-Meal any better than Ovaltine??
E)...........
#:-)

I'm not too much of a fan of modern armors, I do like the Gun Trucks. I spent the better part of this evening scouring the wed for for some kind of a pic of this "proto-type". Nothing yet.
Treadhead, it is so great to see you back with us here! I along with many others have missed you and your posts. Welcome back!
While I can't answer most of your questions, I can say that Ovaltine is the better!

............Yes, but is that because it simply "Taste's Great", or because it's "less filling"??? #:-)

I used to know a lot of those boys from the depot. They make pretty good stuff. Love the name, I'll definitely buy that kit when it comes out!!! ROLL TIDE ROLL
