Hi Tung Nguyen,
I love your latest model. I think the paint job is superb. How did you achieve the effect? How did you paint the tracks?
Did you use any AM sets? What did you use for the engine? It's a pity that no manufacturers make an interior set for the M107/M110!
I've got this kit but I'm going to try to do mine at Camp Carroll during the siege of Khe Sanh.
10/10 & happy modellingto you to!
Joe.

thanks for your comment
This model only OOB,no AM was uesd .
I used hairspray & salt for the paintjob. The track was painted with black acrylic and washed with enamel rust.I used some part from the testor M47 kit for the engine(not accurate).

that M107 was one that was left behind by the 3rd/18th, and left in Chu Lai right in front of the MAG 13 PX. If you look closely you also might see a cradle for the 8" tube as many M107's started life as M110's in the 3rd/18th. Anyway the Navy was supposed to have blown it up, but somebody dropped the ball. If you look at the last page of the old Squadron/Signal book you will see a photo of it right in front of the building with the red & white striped awning. That building is the MAG 13 PX. Been in there a bunch of times.

There is one also in a museum in Warsaw,Poland (http://picasaweb.google.com/artyleriasamobiezna/M107_MWP?feat=embedwebsite#). It arrived here from Vietnam - any idea where exactly that one came from?

think it was titled "Armor In Vietnam". Probably long out of print. The book has French stuff as well as U.S., Australian, and North & South Vietnamese armor in it. Still contains a few location errors, but all in all a good book of pictures

If memory serves me right, there were a few turned over to the South Vietnamese when we cleared out. By chance it has the M110 cradle as well as the M107 cradle, it then came out of I-Corps. Most of the ones used in the south were close enough to a deep water port to bring them back home if then wanted them. Yet there really wasn't as many M107's over there as everybody would like to think (I doubt if it was a 150 max), and most all photos seen of M107's are in A.O.'s north of Tam Key. Which leads me to the thought that the M107 left in Chu Lai probably has a shot out barrel, and was too dangerous to shoot. Plus they probably never left any extra barrels behind when the left Chu Lai. The 3/18th was the one of the last [if not the very last] SPG units left in country in the north. They were headquartered just accross highway One on the south face of Cherry Hill from Chu Lai Airbase. Next time I see Dave Lindsey, I'll ask him to be sure.

Back to Pawel's question. It would be interesting to see if any numbers survive on the fenders of the track. But my guess is that it's one from I-Corps. I also know of no SPG unit operating out of Da Nang back then. Perhaps Camp Evans or Phu Bai? Yet by the war's end they'd all pulled back to the Chu Lai area. Can you by chance get the serial number of the hull?

looked at your photos. That's probably a 3/18th track! Still has the 8" parts on it, and looks to me like it was pieced together after the fact. In otherwords they changed the barrel only (not a real good thing to do). The cylinders & etc all look like M110 stuff, and a 175 gun uses different recoil and elevation parts due to the increased weight and recoil. Also note the lack of the 175 travel lock on the front. They would have installed this during the conversion. The hull looks like a very early M110. I'll be sure to tell Dave about this find!!

good to hear from you my old friend

Fantastic work! I don't often see these vehicles modeled, especially a "derelict" one! That's great work!

my orders were cut for that unit back in December 1967. My whole class was trained for M107's and M110's, and we were told that we'd be with Marines. But at Sill they never said where. I didn't find out till I hit the Replacement Depot over by the Charger Acadamey. They told me, and then tossed them in the trash can.
There was another 175 gun outfit, and for the life of me I can't remember what their numbers were. But do know they were attached to the 196th when they were deployed up on the DMZ in the early 1970's. My fourth first sargent was with them (was kinda hard on first shirts). Like me, he could not figure what he was doing on a towed gun when the tax payers spent all that money training him to shoot M110/M107's. I figure that after the LZ Mary Anne thing they felt he was bullet proof cause his next tour was up there.

you can always find me at the last ice house on the left

spoke with Dave awhile ago, and he said that the two M107's are more than likely ex 3/18th tracks. Seems that as far as he knows they were the only ones doing conversions over there. Also said that some M107's were later coverted back to M110's, and the way to tell is the gun cradle. Also all the remaining barrels used and unused were shipped to Korea

Tungs right. The Italeri kits are discontinued but you should be able to pick one up on ebay. They are on there from time to time.
I picked up both the M107 & M110 on ebay pretty easily.
AM parts for M107 include: 175mm metal barrel from Barrel Depot; Eduard PE set for M107; resin tracks from Sergeant at Arms.
AM parts for M110: 8" turned metal barrel from AFV Clubs M115; Eduard PE set ( use M107 PE set); resin tracks from Sergeant at Arms.
Verlinden make both 175mm & 8" ammo but these are also discontinued. Ebay again.
Hope this helps.
Joe.
