Hi friends,
I am finally getting down to build this expensive Famo and trailer Tamiya kit.
I am thinking of the possibilities of the tank to load on the trailers
a) Can the trailer and famo carry a Brummbär (Tristar early bummbar) ? The tank crew should be wearing green or grey right cos its a SPG?
b) If the trailer were carrying Wirbelwind' and 'Ostwind' as in the tamiya pictures, what should the tank crew be wearing? Panzer black or green uniform, or are they Luftwaffe blue uniformed chaps?
c) Anyone has any interesting suggestions for the payload? can be tank or anything else.
d) How difficult is the famo and trailer kit to build? I haven't build such a big kit with so many sprues before, the biggest kit I ever built were the dragon E-100 and Jagdtiger. Most complex was the AFV Tiger I or dragon Shermans (only did the main tank parts )
Cheers

Hi Kiong!
I have same kit in my stash and I have to admitt, that I´m also waiting the right moment to start it. Don´t have courage yet.. What comes to your guestions; can´t say anything to A & B, sorry.
For C: package cover shows Stug on a trailer, I´m planning to place Tamiya´s Pz III Ausf. L on a trailer with Herman Göring panzerunit markings. Same decals come with Famo and trailer.
For D: here´s partial buildblog by Terry at PMMS, he builds the Famo, and review of Famo and trailer kit:

Hopefully this helps you someway.

You could treat that as two kits though, the Famo and the trailer. Then the third kit will be the tank you plan to put on the trailer. Just building all three simultaneously like building a dio.
I may be wrong, but the biggest tank I've seen on one of those trailer is a Panther.
Regards
Paul

Hi Kiong,
The trailer can carry a Brummbär, as it can carry anything with a Panzer IV chassis. The uniforms should be fieldgrey (Tamiya XF-65, or something alike in the brand you use).
If it carries a Flakpanzer, the crew would most likely be wearing the unit's uniform, so black for a panzerunit, fieldgrey for other Wehrmacht-units and blue for the Luftwaffe.
The payload for the trailer is listed as 22 tons, so a Pz IV variant is the maximum.
As a suggestion, why not a Sd.Kfz. 6 or 7 halftrack?
@Paul, I think I've seen the picture you mean, but on it, the Panther is towed by the Famo.

Hi Peter,
Yes, I think I was confused by this photo. It is a Panther on a Dragon Wagon, not Famo + Trailer.

As far as I can find out; the Brummbär is listed as being 28 tons. This would make it too heavy for the trailer based on the 22 ton payload you mention.
I hope you don't mind, I edited your post in the quote part.

FWIW I have seen at least one photo of a FAMO with trailer carrying an early Brummbar.

I don't mind quoting at all Dave .
The 22 tons I mentioned is for the manually operated Sd. Anh. 116- trailer, as provided with the Tamiyakit. There was also a hydraulic version, which had a (slightly) heavier payload. Unfortunetaly I could only find a reference for the existence of this trailer but no technical specifications.
As both trailers were developed before the Pz. V Panther and Pz. VI Tiger, the design of the bed was not adapted to carry those, but a Brumbär would then be possible.
As for going back on topic, why not a captured Sherman or T34?

Don't forget technical specifications/regulations are one thing, real life is another.
Take railway transport for instance, I've seen photos of armour transported on wagons that were theoretically not strong enough for them, sometimes the flatbed bending like a shelf in a bookcase with too many heavy books!
This works both ways too. I've seen a photo recently of a late model SdKfz 7 towing a 37mm AA gun, this is way too light for that tractor, but in a retreat situation if you have a gun to move and only one powerful enough tractor what do you do?
Cheers,
Christophe

Yes the trailer can carry a Brummbar. It was rated at 22 tons, usually the rating was at 67-75 % of maximum. It could carry a Sherman or a Lee as well.
