Because they remind me one the great time I spent in command of various armoured units...

For no other reason than Trucks and Tanks are COOL!

(Seriously: I never crew-served an armored vehicle. I love aircraft, served in the Air Force, and have built many model jets in my time, but have always loved trucks, trains, and tanks since childhood. Big equipment is awesome. I don't think I might have made a good tanker or trucker because I like the equipment too much. I can live vicariously through modeling them instead.)

Because I can sort of relate to the ground equipment by growing up on it and later on serving with it. As much as I love aircraft, both military and civilian, I could just never get a 'clean' aircraft build (so I haven't built an AC in many years). With AFV etc modeling, I find that it's a lot easier to cover up a mistake.
Now, don't ask me what got me off on this mortar tangent. #:-)

When I was busily misspending my youth, I built the Aurora quarter scale tanks, planes, etc. and the Airfix 72nd scale planes, the odd ship or two... slap 'em together, maybe dab on some paint and then on to the next. I stopped doing models my sophomore year in college (got hooked on photography, among other things) and didn't get the urge to touch a kit until a year or so ago. When I was trying to decide what to build, I decided not to do a plane because they took up too much display room, but tanks and other AFV would fit nicely on my bookshelves, etc. Started off with a SDfz 251/1 from Tamiya, and got seriously hooked. Now my closet is crammed full of kits waiting to be built, my workshop (read: auxillary junk storage area) has been converted to a paint and scenery shop, and I bought a new computer desk that I dedicated to modeling. The more I study up on the vehicles that interest me, the more I want to learn, and build, and who knows, maybe some day I'll actually FINISH something....

Cause they look so darn COOL #:-) Plus they are so fun to build, but are even more fun to detail. I love to weather stuff, but planes, boats, and figures don't allow you to really get them dirty and broken up and stuff, but you can do just about anything to armor and trucks. Don’t get me wrong, I do model those other things, but I really like building armor.
