I noticed on many pictures that LVTP7A1/AAVP7A1 are very often used without the headlights installed - there is just empty space under metal guards in front of the vehicle. Does anybody know why?

Most tracked vehicles come with removable headlights. There are mounts to secure them inside. Eliminate the glare headlights may give off, potential damage to the headlight assemblies during combat/maneuvers, and prevents the driver from accidentily turning them on.

That's interesting why Marines so often use this feature - pictures of other vehicles with headlights missing are quite rare, while for those amphibians it is almost standard configuration.
