What type or types do you reccomend the most for airbrushing. I haven't tried any brands yet and am looking for the best.

Thanks

I use enamels. My favorite brand is Model Master and in second place Humbrol.

Nobody else have any info to offer? So many airbrush users here.

Any info would be great.

Hasty P -

I like Tamiya acrylics for AB.

Reasons: Ease of clean up for acrylics vs enamel, easy to thin with water or IPA, coverage is as good or better than enamel, dry faster and good color variety. In my opinion... anyway

Tamiya

I swear by it for airbrushing- I find the cleanup so easy that I will rarely airbrush with a paint that needs to be thinned with mineral spirits.

I use a variety of mediums: Tamiya acryllics, Model Master acryllics, and good old craft acryllics you can buy at the craft places like Michaels, or Lewiscraft. The kinds I use are the Delta Creamcoat, FolkArt, and Michaels house brand. They come in a ton of color ranges, and are much much cheaper than the Big Name paints, and they are just as good. Get the bottled kind, as the tube acryllics arent' quite the same...I airbrushed some "dark yellow" on my last Tiger tank to give it the base coat, and it worked wonders. Just thin with water, and shoot. And the stuff dries FLAT. No sheen! And it weathers nice as well. The only thing is that it takes a few light coats to get good coverage.

As per most hobby related things is question of personal preferences. I find myself confortable with a wide range of paints like:

- Tamiya (acrylics)
- Model master (enamles)
- Hobby Color (acrylics)
- Humbrol (enamels)
- Winsor & Newton
- various minor/local brands of acrylics colours/primers

I think you have to try and choose which work best for you...

Hi HastyP

I'm like Scoccia... I've got virtually every brand on the shelf!! :-)

Both enamels and acrylics have their plus points... for instance, to take two extremes...

Tamiya acylics dry quickly, but are not very robust (thinning with cellulose helps) and don't have a wide range of colours. Xtracolour enamels have a gloss (decal-ready) finish in more colours, are rock hard - but take ages to dry... the permutations are almost endless

Really, you have to find what's best for you... don't take anyone else word for it...

All the best

I used to use Humbrol enamels all the time. Then i tried out Tamiyas acrylics and these would be #1 now for spraying. I still sparay with enamels sometimes, but thats only for the choice of colours. The usual sands, greys and greens I use Tamiya, for pretty much the reasons above. But for all paint work, drybrushing and detail work, I still use the humbrols!

While we're on the topic of Airbrush paint choices...(so this is not entirely off-topic)

When using acrylics, is it OK to thin them with plain old tap water? I've heard (I think) of folks using alcohol and other mediums (fancy word, eh?) to thin them but since tap water is the easiest to come by...

THANKS!
