I use white or just barely off white (white with a drop of gray. Your preference and technique will determine which type of paint you use. I use acrylic for nearly everything. What technique are you wanting to use/try? As a heads up, while many modelers, trying to be like Mig or those guys (who are fantastic painters with great techniques) will wear away most of the whitewash and weather the tank to oblivion, this is not always needed or advisable. There are many pix of tigers etc with very intact winter coats.

I would go with acrylic. The color could be all kind of white shades.. They used whatever paint they could get their hands on to paint the tanks.

Hi!
I have never done a white coat - but I have a flak-p that I AM going to do one on...so I'm thinking about exactly this question!
I plan to use maybe a couple of white-shades in acrylic. I'm thinking a late-war vehicle in later winter with a patchy combo of worn white paint and a few bed-sheets... thinking that the tri-colour base should show thru in lots of areas.
Point being: vehicles came in all sorts of jobs- barely there to very complete white coats. You have a lot of options as to what, where, and how much!
I suggest look up some photos of winter panzers and form a vision of what you want your's to look like. Do you want a "fresh job", maybe a patchy last-minute mop n broom look, maybe a spring image with a mostly-trashed coat? You will find some example that will lead you towards whatever you wabt to show.
Depending on what you decide, recall that the white stuff was probably applied over a camo coat... And, if you decide that you want something less than complete, you'll want to consider where and how this base will show thru. I'm thinking of spraying my whites on sparsely over a complete tri-c job, and maybe washing some off in places, so as to try and capture what happens as the white washes off- maybe as if it were water-soluble or a "white-wash" product....
Cheers!
Bob

I think Bob has the right idea. One "white wash" is not the same as the next. You would need a photo or a clear idea of what you are trying to achieve before you choose a color or a technique to achieve the desired finish.
Take a look at Phil Stutcinskas article in TMMI from early 07'. Three years later, this is still the best "white wash" I have yet to see. If you can find the article, it spells out how he achieved this excelent finish. If you are interested in this article and can't find it, I will be glad to scan it and e-mail it to you.

Phil's build also available from here. Its the first magazine I brought coming back to modelling. An inspiration.

Thanks for the link!
PS: That great build pic. That's EXACTLY the effect I am looking to create (OK, I'll add a couple of soiled bed-sheets draped on the barrels of the Flakvierling...), albeit I can sincerely promise mine won't come out anywheres near as fine as that!
