Is anybody using these paints for there models?.. I went to a local IPMS meeting and these guys swear by this paint, better than any MM enemal or Tamiya (all hate), contrary to what 'we' post on the site...

Just wondering...

Floquil is a laquer based railroad paint. There aren't any direct color matches for military use. They don't brush on well being too "hot" for most plastics. That said, when fired through an airbrush they give a dead flat, supremely thin, very durable finish. They don't need to be thinned from the bottle to the airbrush, but that quality makes it hard to use with a brush on metals.

I'm not 100% sure what you mean by this. They are listed on the bottle with military designations. I'm not sure but I have several that say things like US Olive Drab, British dark earth. I picked up several on a close out six months or so ago and I like them. I haven't air brushed them yet but that will be next.

On the contrary, 1oz bottles of Floquil Railroad paints are oil based enamels and like Rodger has mentioned Floquil makes a small line of 1/2 oz Military designated colors.
.. CLICK ON LINK > http://www.kingshobby.com/floquil.htm
I use Floquil Railroad Enamels for my military model painting amongst other brands I have. However, the 1oz RR enamels are very thin and are best for airbrushing and dry DEAD FLAT.

Other Floquil enamel colors such as GRIMY BLACK - GRIME - MUD - AGED CONCRETE - ENGINE BLACK - etc-etc are excellent for washes when weathering armor and diorama ground work & buildings. Floquil color "OXIDE RED " #110186 is a close match for the "red oxide " that the Germans applied as a primer base for their armor and that's what I use it for. Speaking of primer, Floquil's "primer gray " #110009, is in my opinion the best enamel primer on the market.

I think Floquil Railroad Colors is the brand that's been around the longest, so there's very good reason why modelers ...... ESPECIALLY train / railroad modelers swear by it.
And if you like acrylic's better, you can get the same choice of colors with POLLY SCALE RAILROAD ACRYLIC PAINTS ...... also in 1oz bottles.

Howdy,

I've used Floquil, with great results.

You're painting AFV's right?......try craft paints, you'll be impressed.

Hey, Ralph, they were lacquers once upon a time. I use nothing else but Floquil. The new "enamels" mix OK with the older stuff but I just use them seperately. AFV-G2 magazine gave dozens of paint mixes from Floquil for different camo colors for different countries. What I don't have I mix to match. It's no different than oil mixing. But I've always found a stock color that matched what I want without a problem Testors bought them out and proceeded to put them out of business in the military color field so they could sell their crap, but had to continue making the RR colors because no one else has a better line and they had nothing with which to replace it.

Hi Paul, yes I know, but "once upon a time " is long gone now I figured it's best to give "present day " information. However, despite my words of praise for Floquil, when they were laquers ( Dio-sol based ), they also BRUSHED on nicely. Ever since the change to enamel they are very thin and only good for airbrushing and a brushed on wash.
.. Yes, it seem's that Testors never heard of that old cliche " If it ain't broke ..... don't fix it "

Rember POLLY - S ? They ruined " the all time best " water based acrylic and turned it into a solvent based acrylic, as we now know as POLLY SCALE ...... Testors Corp should have left things alone. Some thing's are better off that way , ya know ?

Hi TREAD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's been a while, huh ? I hope all is well ?
Yes, it's a damn shame. I have a friend who still has some in perfect condition and only uses them on 1/35 & some 120mm figures. I wish I knew if there was a rack of them laying around in some hobby shop back room .... I'd buy that rack up so fast !
( LOL ) ................REALLY ! :-)

Here's a big AMEN on the Polly-S. THe stuff was excellent. Polly Scale isn't bad, but it ain't Polly-S.
PS: I stand corrected on my laquer statement.
