Hello

here is the my latest work in progress

Its the UMmt 1/72nd OB-3 armoured wagon with T-26 turrets

Its close to painting stage though still needs some tidying up.

I need to add a few rivets to the turrets, and need to replace the buffers at each end of the train, as the kit supplied ones are not very good, and are too short.

a few pictures are below, I'll post again when its been advanced a bit more

cheers
Neil

hi Neil,

Interesting subject this kit. It seems that is doesn't contain that much parts, does it? Is the PE included?

Hi Neil!
Thanks for posting. I´ll be following this closely, because I have same kit waiting for to get started on another campaign next year. For spaarndammer and other interested, all UM armored train kits include PE set and track section.

Neil, here you go again with another unique and ugly contraption. Looks very interesting for such an otherwise simple vehicle. The PE is particularly nice. Thanks for showing the preliminary stages of your build as I and others find these types of posts most interesting.

Cheers,
Jan

Hello everyone

thanks for the comments and interest.

A few comments about the build, for anyone that has his kit, or is thinking about gettingit. These are just my findings with the build and my opinions, they should not be seen as 'expert' advice, as I'm no expert on anything

* two pieces of track and all the PE are supplied

* The axles for the wheels are very thin & weak. This doesnt matter too much as the body is light. When attaching the wheels to the axles, use a piece of track to ensure you have the width right. I had to shorten the axles by a millimetre of so.

* The hull is two pieces, which does make for a fairly quick build. I found it to be a fairly good fit, but not perfect. In a small area on both sides the hull sides didnt fit neatly between the top and bottom half, so I had to keep a fair bit of pressure on it (with my hands) for about 15 minutes to ensure it sealed without a gap. I had to use a small amount of filler for a couple of other spots, where the hull was not a perfect fit

* You will use quite a few knife blades cutting the PE from its sprue, as the metal blunts them fairly quickly, and breaks the sharp point on the blade. The small rungs are the hardest to cut out neatly. I considered replacing them with thin gauge wire bent to shape, which would require drilling small holes to loacte them to the body

* The buffers are too short & not very well moulded. Whats supplied can be improved on by scratchbuilding or getting some model railway spares

* The links for the coupling hook are very not realistic looking. I wont put them on, and will look for an alternative to replace them

* the turrets could use side vision ports and a few rivets. These can be seen on the box lid illustration but are not on the supplied kit turrets. The ports can be made with a sharpened micro screw driver, and I'll make a few rivets to go around the vision port, and a small group next to the gun mantlet. I'll post pictures of these when I've added the rivets.

I think thats about it. Overall not a bad kit to build, but not a good one for anyone who doesn't like PE.

I'll post pics when I get the turret ports and rivets added

cheers
Neil

Neil,

Nice start you have going on this kit. I'll be dropping in to check out your progress. Thanks for posting your findings. It is a very interesting subject. Will you be placing this one on a dio? Maybe park a small vehicle next to it with a few figures so we can see just how large the real one was.

Hello all

Eddy thanks for your comment.

I have replaced the buffers. I thought they were badly shaped, and Ilian Filipov tells me they were also not long enough

I have also added vision slits, and rivets to the turrets, placed as per a line drawing plan of 1933 T-26 I found on the web.

I just need to give a thin base coat, to see if more filler or sanding needed in any areas of the hull. Its easier to see when everything is the one shade of colour.

New buffers and some of the rivetting can be seen below

I've taken a couple of shots with other 1/72nd scale rail vehicles to give an idea of its size

cheers
Neil

Hello

I have given the car an light overall spray coat of Humbrol Matt 98. I lost a few of the rivets I'd added to the turrets, but they will be easy to replace. One of the armoured plates at the end came loose, this will be easy to refix.

I'll tidy up the details, let this coat dry for a few days then give it a coat of green

pics below

cheers
Neil

Looking good, Neil. You've got a nice variations in shade happening. I concur with Dani that you have quite the makings of a full armoued train there.

Cheers,
Jan

Hi Jan

Thanks. I'm enjoying making a variety of rail cars at present, not sure if I'll proceed to a full armoured train just yet. I may place a couple of these togethre in a small diorama.

here is a couple of pics of the OB-3 after a wash

it is now close to finished

cheers
Neil

Yet another unusual build from you. Good job.

As for the armoured train I suppose it must also have cargo wagons else what's the point of the armored escort yes/no ?

Hello

thanks to all for the comments

here is another I'm calling completed,

link & screw couplers were made from wire & stretched sprue, using liquid superglue to assemble

the air hoses are wire, the air hose couplers are made from modified spare etch

since the last update, this build has had another spray job with green, more washes, drybrushing, had the barrels drilled out, and some of the rivets that came loose from the turret were replaced

its in a new diorama that is in progress, just for a couple of pictures

cheers
Neil

Nice work Neil. I like the look of the two turrets on this one, I'll keep an eye out for one of these. Did you make all those loose bricks on the right in the last picture?
Cheers,
Tim
