I picked up all of the various MIG rust pigments for my current project which includes a bunch of rusted iron/steel and my first attempt looks very unrealistic. This isn't my first time using pigments, but I think I am doing something wrong in this case. I have compare my attempt to pics of real rusted metal and I don't like my results. Are there any tutorials on-line that might show where I went wrong?

I went back and figured out where I went wrong with at least the standard rust and the old rust. I will check out this link and see if I can get the results I want with the rest. Thank you for posting.

I agree, Rob Ferreira is the best rust master there is. I get to see his work in person all the time and it's even more impressive live. Just phenomenal the effects he achieves. Rob's Website

He does have very impressive work, I'm thinking about taking on a bog scene similar to the one he did for the KV-2. Thanks for sharing the link with us Gene and Matthew!

First off let me thank you guys for visiting my website and the kind words you've left here.
@SSGToms, Hey Matt thank you my friend, glad you like my models and rust. I'm looking forward to seeing you and the guys again at my model workshop in February.
Matthew, Using pigments alone either wet or dry is a bit tricky to get the most realistic result, and as with most techniques requires practice. Try using the pigments with other materials ie; oils and rust effects. Once you get the base rust on you can vary the rust tones using MIG standard and light rust effects. These two are perfect for replicating staining and streaking. By mixing the Abt502 oils with pigments you create texture to the rust. Final rusting with brighter colored rust pigments, applied dry helps finish off the the effects.
The key is to experiment with various painting materials to get the feel for the products, and of course it all depends on the type of rust you want to replicate. I use the Lifecolor rustset for a base rust color, then the other materials come into play.
I hope this helped in some way. I plan on doing some videos on doing rust some time in the near future.
Cheers

Rob,
I am discovering that like all things in this hobby, it requires practice. I plan to experiment with your mixed media approach when I have a project with a larger surface for now, I think I am happpy with the results I am getting with the pigments alone, though I think what I missing thus far is your sponging technique, which I am going to try next. Thank you for posting and thank you for your website I am sure I will fnd if invaluable.
