Great work on your Patton two questions for you.....What barrel have you used and have you possibly got a photo you've based your M48 on?

Another great build! Nice to see more of your work here Chris.

@Jaymes: For more M48 inspiration I suggest that you check out the "M-48 and M-60 version in Vietnam" set in this gallery.

Dave,
That is "Doctor Doom" a CS/tear gas projector... It fires off CS pellets over a 35-50 yard square area. Great for busting up ambushes in Viet Nam or in more present day application gassing unsuspecting soldiers at the National Training Center aka NTC.

Gizmo,
Great looking M48A3 - I though that you were building a 1-69 Armor tank, with the M113 MG mount in front of the loader's hatch.

The a couple things that stand out that you might want to fix... The headlight guards need a bar added to the inner sides and there are no bolts on the rim of the searchlight. I built a similar model last year and am contemplating starting another one sometime soon.

Great work

The M48 is looking great. I like what you have done to it so far. I have built a Vietnam M48A3 and an IDF Magach 3 (M48A3) over the last year. I might have to do another soon. One thing I see. The version that had the M60-style headlights were M48A2s and had only 3 return rollers, as opposed to the 5 that M48A3s had.

A German M48A2C, which was basically the same as the US version. You can just make out the M60-style headlight and only 3 return rollers in these pics.

Actually the "B" model M48A3, used in Nam had the M60 style headlights, and 5 return rollers, check the reference photos in the beginning of this thread.

Terry,
I had some help(frenchy) with the phone box and cs-box,as I did not know what is was. I think it turned out great.

John.
No,The one with the M113 m60shield is done by Andy Evans, that a nice one to
The bar,you mean horizontal ?
otherwise I dont understand.
bolt on the searchlight, Ive think I make them too big, there srews right? no bolts

Gino
When it comes to us armour your comments are always welkom.
I always use pictures for my build, for the headlights I used these.

5 toproller and m60 headlights.

So the build is correct right?
otherwise I have to change it.

Anyone knows more about this M48?, I think I need PSP plating...

all of you thank you for your comments

Sorry, you are good. I forgot about the Mod B tanks. Most of them were used by the ARVN.

A fair number of M48A3 Mod Bs were used by US Forces from about 1968 on... 11th ACR were almost entirely equipped with Mod Bs in their Cav Troops and Tank Companies, err, that is before the Sheridan showed up and then the M48s were only in the tank companies... Also most replacement tanks from '68 on were Mod Bs. Some were cascaded to the ARVN armored forces as well as "new" ones. Most Mod Bs were upgraded to M48A5s in the mid-late 70's as a quick fix to compensate for the low US Tank inventories caused by replacing Isreal's YKW losses.

Chris,
Yes, I was talking about the horizonal bar. Send an e-mail to [email protected] and I can send a couple close up pictures of the light guards and mounts. IMHO, those bolts on the searchlight are too big but probably 90% of your fans will not even notice them... Several of your pictures above are 1-69 tanks So I know why the .,50 Caliber MG is mounted like it is... I have heard of tanks that had PSP welded to the fenders as protection for the hull from RPGs.

Again, great work and I look forward to seeing it painted.

the only batallion I ever knew of that used steel PSP plate for added armor was the 3/4 CAV. Read the book Hundred Miles Of Bad Road, and you'll see pictures of other 48's with the PSP plate added to the sides

Gary introduced me to that book, "Hundred miles of bad road" & I have to say it's a pretty hair raising read. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in Vietnam & the M48A3 in particular. A real bad ass!!!

My brother inlaw started out in the "Quarter CAV" in the late summer of 1968, and when the "Big Red One" went home they sent him to B Troop 1/1st armored CAV. When he came home he told me about this guy he'd heard about in the 3/4 CAV, and I thought this guy was a little over hyped. But boy was I wrong! This guy had to have at least nine lives, and probably expended eight of them more than once! Dwight Birdwell was serious business, and will always come as a hero in my eyes. And the boy was sure hard on equipment!

For those interested in this, the launcher was designated the E8, and was used as intended (as a ground launcher) during the conflict in Vietnam as well.

Here's a picture:
