Was there by any chance that this tank was painted Dark gray? Accdg. to my research, Dark gray was only used as a last resort when dark green or any other base coat ran out. I'm specifically referring to the Ausfuerhung J. & if there is any, what was their unit no.? & also the nos. on the tanks themselves.
Thanks.

I've read dozens of posts on the subject of Pz Gray being used as a last resort cammo. But.. The "conventional wisdom" is that this just didn't happen.
If I were to build a speculative "final days" Pz 4, 5, 6 or variants, I'd go overall primer red with thin hard edge dark green and Pz Gray cammo... I could invision the factories making do with a quick, spartan, cammo scheme over the primer using whatever paint stocks were at hand. But then, I'm not a a bolt-counter. JMHO!

There is an interesting scheme described in Osprey's NV-39 "Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf.G, H and J 1942-45" that consisted of red primer overall with broad patches of thin dark yellow outlined in white with futher patches of dark green near the bottom of the vehicle. This was all hard edged.
I suspect that the dark green is often mistaken for being panzer grey as they look very much alike when dusty.

Hi Fritz, why don't you make it simple and go with straight dunkelgelb.
As for the rest of your questions that would depend on the Heer or Waffen SS unit. You really need to be specific and there are plenty of good websites & books that you could dig into to find this information.

Fritz,
In the Osprey NV-28, there is a color plate of a 2nd PzDiv. Ausf J with a white outline "823" on the turret schurtzen and with a 3 color ambush scheme. There is also an unknown unit's Ausf J painted dunkelgelb with hard edge primer red stripes painted vertically. Looks neat.
You are getting lots of ideas here. Good luck

Hi All,
Actually, you don't need to be specific as most pz4 ausf J's were painted at the factory. By the end (Jan-Mar 45), the red-brown primer was used as a base color and thin bands of yellow and/or green were added as supplies allowed. Some vehicles were probably left in the red-brown primer. HTH.
Regards,
Georg

I found this on the net but it's a Finnish Panzer IV.
