How do you get a texture effect with this stuff? Do you just paint it on or do you have to do something else with it?? I'm about to do some serious work on a Sherman turret that will require texturing and I've never used this stuff before.

chop down the bristles on a paint brush.
paint on the mr stinkey filler and stipple it with the sawn off paintbrush ...great for that cast look.to do weld lines stick on a piece of masking tape then another at the side of it leaving a small gap to create the weld width then stipple the mr stinky over the gap .wait 2 mins then pull the tape off.
simples
oh and if you mess it up you can wash it off with mr stinky color thinner even when it has dried ,you can use it to thin the filler and to keep it wet while your working it

I don't know how serious sherman turrets are cast. It seems Mr.surfacer should be sufficient. I use it to do zimmerit.
To get a texture, brush a fair amount on (I put it on really thick for zimmerit, I am talking gobbs and gobbs). If you do not put enough on, you will just be painting the turret grey and cannot texture it. After the thinner starts to set up and get fairly thick, use a stippled brush as reccommended and texture it to your desire.
It will get very messy and it will not look right at first, but just keep rubbing. Eventually it will dry and look like a crappy surface, which is good for simulating cast turrets

Also (to stick my oar in here) have both granularities if possible. The finer grit does steel surfaces a treat for me, while the grittier stuff is great for cast parts. Sometimes to take the edge off so it's more to scale, I rub it down with a nylon cloth after it has dried.

The 500. And try not to be in the same room with it for more than 30 seconds, because after that you start seeing pink bunnies singing show tunes.

No kidding, that stuff is crazy-stinky! Thank's for all the info guys, I'll be filling and sanding tonight. Filling in a hatch and pistol port on the Dragon composite Sherman turret. Wish me luck!

To be honest, mr.surfacer isn't bad.
Laquer thinner - smells like I am getting cancer, but damned if I can find a better flat finish
Liquid mask - smells like old rubber. Do not want.
Mr. surfacer, enamel thinner, windex (for cleaning airbrush), and decal set; well these are a few of my favorite things.
No I am not a sniffer, but I do use my nose to see how things are drying. I can't lie though, I really do like nail polish remover.

Roy, I tried your technique for the weld and mr. stinkey works great. Thanks for the tip.
