If you are looking to build a recently abandoned house, leave most of the furniture in it and objects strewn around. Mig has a great set of modern household items like a microwave, computer, refrigerator, desk chair, etc. Some of the WWII-era couches and bedroom furniture sets can still be used too. Other items can be scratched.
For one that has been abandoned a while, most of the usable items would be looted and gone. It would be pretty bare except for broken furniture and debris. I would leave some loose rags/fabric, pulled down drapes, and maybe a few items like pictures, books, etc. strewn about.
Some exaples or warzone abandoned, modern houses:
Hope that helps. Good luck.

hi Stan,
Gino has some great pics there and the idea that it's been looted makes for some interesting details (such as cabinets and kitchen drawers all opened and pilfered).
one thing i could suggest is that if the roof has been damaged you can depict moisture and rot on the walls in that area to depict the effect the weather elements have on the interior now that it has been exposed for a long time.
this sounds like a great project, love the what-if themes. looking forward to seeing the progress. cheers, bd.

The key is to leave things in the house to show someone was there and left in a hurry. Knock things over, leave pictures on the wall (or floor below where thehy hung). Put some debris in and around the whole place.
Use pastels to dust it up a bit.

Mold and mildew can be done with green and brown pigments. Water spots with different variations of the base paint.
Dust and dirt, pigments again.
Airbrush some dirt colored pigment mixed with thinner over the whole area when done just to blend in

mold can also be done using dark tones like browns and blacks, done in vertical streaks to show rainfall on the walls. Mig Pigments are a good way to do dust. when you make the walls and roof make extra pieces to break up and place around the scene so that you can fill up the interior with rubble. cheers, bd.
