I finished this diorama a while ago but just got around to taking some pics. Info is as follows:
Kits Used: Dragon Sd.Kfz.171 Panther A Late Production – MiniArt Village Road w/Ruined House – Various Dragon Figures.
Scale: 1/35
Depiction: One of the many battles in and around Caen Jun/Jul 1944.
Modifications/additions: Eduard Photo Etch used for the zimmerit coating on the Panther. A dremel tool was used to simulate chipping and missing pieces of the zimmerit. Modelkasten tracks and an after market metal barrel were also used.
Paint and Finish: Paints used were Lifecolor acrylics for base and camo. Vallejo acrylics and Humbrol enamels were used for the majority of on-board equipment. Weathering was done with oil paints and pigment powders. Dragon figures were painted with Vallejo acrylics and oil paints. Miniart base was completed with home made rubble and tree.
Reason for building model: I wanted to build a diorama that represented a snapshot in the battle in and around Caen during Jun/Jul of 1944.
I hope you enjoy the pics.

Thanks everyone. The tree I made from two items from Scenic Express.
1. SUPERTREES are a natural scale tree form indigenous to the Arctic tundra of Scandinavia. A distant cousin to our western sagebrush, their intricate detail and perfect branch structure produce an incredible scale tree unsurpassed in realism.
2. Leaf Flake Foliage. Comes in a little mat but I just crumpled and rolled it until the little leaves fell off.
Then I just sprayed the Supertree with a white glue/water mix and started sprinkling the leaves on.

The figures are absolutely amazing! Is there any guide you use to painting the camouflage? And also, how do you capture the shading and the highlights so well? I am just getting into the detailing of figures, especially WWII Germans, and I am looking for all the advice I can find.
Thanks and great work!

Thanks Gman. The guide I use for painting camo figures is by Osprey Publishing, called Modelling the Waffen SS. I can't recommend this book high enough. It uses great step by step photos to lead you through the process and also gives you all paint colors and mixtures. Vallejo paints are used throughout. Shading is done through selective pin washes and highlights through dry brushing. Boot dusting is with dry pigments. All flesh is done with artist oil paints and that's where it's a bit more tricky to show effective blending. Hope this helps a little. Let me know if there's anything else I can add.
Cheers

Thanks for that Ty! I ordered this book and it arrived in the mail not too long ago. It has already been such a huge help in getting the camouflage patterns right as well as the highlights and shading. Thanks for all the advice! I have completed several 1/35 German figures in the last few months and I can definitely see an improvement after I read this and ordered the book. As soon as I can, I am going to try to put up some pics of the Germans I finished and see if I can get any more feedback.
Thanks again!

Hi Romain. Thank you and I agree! Calvin Tan is a fantastic painter and he describes the process in a very logical manner with lots of step by step photos to help things along. The only thing I don't follow of his is the faces. I can't get the hang of using acrylics for flesh shadows and highlights. I have found much better results with artists oils. But hey, that's part of the fun of this hobby. Try new things! I hang on to what works but if I see a new (to me) painting method I'll give it whirl.
Cheers
Ty
