I was wondering if gluing the figure to the top of the a thumbtack, and then inserting it in the groundwork would work. I was thinking about the flat headed tacks and not the one like below.

I then thought about putting snow around the boot to cover up the tack, but would this whole idea even work?

If you can think of another cheap and fast and easy way to secure them to the base, I am all ears.

I used Celluclay for the ground work!

Thanks!

Chip and Laurie,

I would stay away from the thumbtack idea, I don't believe you will achieve enough 'bite' into the groundwork for a truely secure attachment. Instead, I would recommend that you drill a hole in the bottom of the foot about up to the top of the ankle and insert a heavy wire. I use paper clip wire and a #61 drill bit in a motor tool. Insert the straightened paper clip, super glue it and cut the protruding wire off leaving about 1/2 inch or so (you did leave enough, right...) You can now use the end of the wire in the figures foot to easily mark where the figure will be placed, drill a pilot hole and when you are ready to attach it, add a drop of CA or white glue and you are good to go. Your idea of covering the foot with snow is good, I would bring the ground work up the boot or pant leg gradually fading away about mid-calf. Good luck on your project.

Thanks Clovis,

I will do that tommorrow. Would the thumbtack deal work for the tracks on my King Tiger? The snow built up in the road wheels would cover up the tack.

Thanks again.

I use the same method as clovis899. It works very well. You can get different diameter paper clips depending on your need.
I usually do the drilling and inserting into the foot very early in figure contruction. The wire gives me a 'free' hand hold out of the way and it I can also clamp the wire without fear of maring the finish or surface of the figure.

Using the style tack you've shown is ging to force you to use a lot of ground material which will take longer to cure. Your tank's treads have more than enough surface space to allow for adequate adhesion to the base using even white glue.

The hole in the foot method is the best Chip. Not only do you get a very solid figure using the wire etc, but while constructing the figure I always stick a toothpick in the hole and have a ready made handle for the figure which makes painting SO MUCH EASIER!! No more greasy oil from your hand making your figure look like it was painted in gloss colors.

I used a cut up paper clip, and drilled a hole in the guys foot. It worked, and now almost a year after I started it, I am almost completed.

Thanks guys!
