Am working on two Elefants (one with AM Zimmerit and one with molded-on), and want to know:

Tracks "handed" or reversed like Tiger I? Photos are limited, but look handed.

Is there Zimmerit on the from of the fighting compartment? The photos are inconclusive, but it looks like no or only 2 small triangles along the side. The DML model with molded-on Zim has it in a straight line across the front under the gun.

Frenchy?????

The tracks are interchangeable for either side, Bill. The Initial Production Tiger I (Henschel) was the only version had handed tracks.

Re Zim on the front, the first photo is of an Elefant of the 653rd at the Anzio-Nettuno bridgehead, Spring 1944. You can see the remnants of zimmerit on the front of the vehicle:

The second really shows "Zim" on front:

Sorry, this was too good to pass up.

Hi Bill

You are talking about the area behind the drivers around the barrel, right?

I went through all my refs and there were few head on and pics and even less clear ones. I do have 1 fairly good shot of one that does not have the zim. Even if it did, with the all the zim on the side and rear being about the bottom 1/3, there wouldn't be much room to put it and i don't think is would have done much good (that is of course assuming zim ever did any good ever ) And 1 pic could be the exception not the rule, but I would also think that when all the Ferdies went in for the refit they all would been treated the same.

I don't know how to get a photo out of a PDF doc so I iwll email a PDF of that page.

BTW... good to see you!

The Ferdinands had Zim across the front of the crew compartment and on top of the deck where the barrel is resting. Or are you asking about just this one vehicle?

The Ferdinand tracks were two parts, one with and one without the guide horn. Since there was an odd number of links you will find two links with the guide horn next to one another. The tracks are the same for both sides. The only change was to increase the width after the initial issue.

Thanks, Gents.

To clarify: I was talking about the portion of the "box"/crew/fighting compartment. On most of the photos I've seen, there is NO Zim on the portion facing the front (the gun side). The DML Elefant with Zimmerit kit I'm doing a build log on (not yet put up here, but soon) has Zim along that side, while the Cavalier AM Zim set for the Elefant Premium Edition has no Zim. I have gotten OK with Milliput Zim and can apply it, but wondered if it was just not all that widespread or if DML made a boo-boo by putting Zim on the front of the crew box?

Hey, Marc, thanks for the photo!

The plate with the MG and driver's visor har Zimmerit applied when they were in the factory. I don't know if the crew's use if the deck infront of it to carry equipment and suppies caused it to be knocked off or if those i-Talians stole it while the vehicles were left unattended?
