The M998 'I.E.D. Gun Truck' never existed as a 'manufactured' variant. The vehicle configuration was a result of soldiers in the field mounting various items to the vehicles.

However, the configuration was very common during OIF 1 and OIF 2 (I was seeing them in July 2004 when I left Iraq). I saw the configuration in several places throughout Iraq fromBalad to Baghdad to Al-Kut and Najaf.

The 'I.E.D.' configuration was gradually phased out as M1114's became more widely available and standardized. The exposed gunners position was a stop gap measure only and was quickly dropped as the use of road side bombs became wide spread and constant.

Hope this helps. There are several other very knowledgable people here on Armorama. Hopefully they will contribute to this as well.
