Some free articles to get you started: Historicus Forma Painting Articles
The Osprey books are generally good, but you do need to look beyond the fact that many of them are written for a particular genre of figure. For oils two that spring to mind are those by Mark Bannerman and Jaume Ortiz.
As a armour/dioramarist you must surely have read Shep Paine's diorama book? There's a very useful chapter therein about figure painting. If you like his style of painting and writing have a look for his out of print figure modelling book - the diorama book's chapter is a summary of the figure book content.

Mark Bannerman's stuff is incredible, he has a series of articles on painting faces here:
painting heads
also, I've always found it easier to get a better result painting resin heads than styrene. I suppose it has to do with the deeper detail in the sculpting taking the washes and highlights more easily. I you really want to improve the look of your figures a resin head is probably the best bang for your buck, Im a huge fan of hornet's stuff but ultracast and even Alpine are releasing head sets now.
Best of luck to you!

Hi
Compendium Films do quite a good DVD on figure painting although it is almost totaly about using an airbrush to paint a large scale model figure. Andrea Do a PC CD on Painting a Medieval Figure.
Hope this is of help

One I wouldnt recommend is Euro Modelismo "Black & White" guide to figure painting by Mike Blank. His other book on figure sculpture is superb. However, his painting technique is, I think over complicated for the beginner as it is based on using acrylics, enamel, oils and inks. This isnt helped by poor presentation and my copy at least was the worst book I have ever seen for mistakes. Not only typos, but whole sentances appear to be missing.
This is a shame because I really like Mike Blanks work and I cant recommend his book on sculture any more highly.

I have the same problem with finding SBS's about oil painting but you might check out Calvin Tan's book. He paints a lot of the box work for Alpine Miniatures has an Osprey book that's excellent. It shows how he paints using acrylics. You could adapt with oils.

Also, if you don't find what you want on Historicus Forma try Planetfigure. They also have tons of stuff. http://www.planetfigure.com/forums/index.php?
