Dear friends,

One and a half years ago i picked up scale modelling again after 25 years. My special intrest would be diorama's.
The last thing i buildt was a FW190 ootb. No painting, no weathering etc.

So here i am building my first diorama. As said before, i started this 1,5 year ago, but i want to share it with you on this forum.

The idea is a hangar with aircraft and some maintenance and, i hope, lots of detail. All in 1/48 scale.
But most important ... practising!

Building a hangar out of cardboard and foamboard.

Painted it with white acrylic and some birdsand for some structure.

The inside of the hangar.

An ammoshelter made out of foamboard.

Concrete and hill is made from wallfiller.

Enough for now. Tommorrow there will be more

Found some time to continue today.

Made a tree out of metal wire.

The 'bark' is thinned moddeling clay.

After painting and drybrushing the tree i used Basilicum as foliage.

Balsawood was used to build a wooden 'fench' or whatever you call it, to secure the small hill besides the hangar. A root of the tree has damaged it.
And a rainwater disposal is build of brashwire.

Close up.

Daylight picture of the hill with ammobunker after putting on the bushes, tree, grass and foliage. Some warningsigns, barbwire and a mudd pool were placed also.

The ledlight will give it an extra dimension. I'll have to tune it down a little.

Some overall pictures.

A ladder was made of balsawood and the paintcan of a piece of straw.

The painter is picking up his responsibillity.

The just finished Henschel 123.

And the kettenkraftrad with power supply i build 1,5 year ago. These were build before i started with the diorama. Some of the figures you see on the diorama will be used. These were also painted before the start of the diorama.

This is where i am right now. The next thing will be a lot of details and some more figures.
In these 1,5 years i have learned a lot. I hope to learn more the comming months building the rest of the diorama. Maybe Santa will be so nice to give me an airbrush.

But first things first...figure painting. I will do this with Vallejo. I hope to show you the results soon.
Tx for watching

Although the scratchbuilding is excellent, I think the lights are the perfect touch of reality. Well done.

Small update.

Some scratchwork items on the right.
The figures that are already painted will be re-painted. These are old figures.
Half of the barrels and small items are already painted.

I'm in doubt to use the Feldgendarme on the right. My idea was to place him under the tree as a guard, but Feldgendarmes weren't used to do homeguard duties.

Next thing to do is use some putty on some of the figures, prime and paint everything.
There will be more scratchwork after that.

Great ground work. The foilage is excellent. I like the hanger front as well, but as its so open and nothing behind it, you should take extra care when photographing. A dark plain background will probably be best.

Thanks for the advice Frank. For me photographing is probably the most difficult part of the hobby. Ya can't blame all on the camera

And here we are again. After a month of tough labour most of the small parts are done and some of the scratchwork is finished.
Here are the pictures...

On the left a small table for the tools used at the plane. In the middle one for the hangar and at the right one to use at the Henschel. The last 2 are made of Evergreen and balsa. The plaid of table 1 is made of tissue soaked in thinned white glue.

Some drums. One DAK heavy wheatered because of the climat difference. At the back a leaking barrel. This one will be worked out later.

Some oxygen bottles scratched from sprue and copper wire.
.

And an overall picture.

Some of the items will need some pigments. This i will do when they are placed on the diorama.
Next update will be of 9 men waiting to get some colour. Oh and a dog...

Placed some of the small items inside the hangar.

I have figured out the final layout of the diorama so i will secure the plane on it's place and also the rest of the small items. After that... figure painting...

These are the final pictures of my first diorama. It was a learning project for me. I tried to scratchbuild as much as i could and handpainted everything. No AB used.
I must say i love building 48th scale.
My next project, Leeuwarden civil airport with a DC 2 in 1938. Before the germans turned it into a militairy airbase.

Enjoy the pics (i hope)

Johan,

Very well done, especially in 1/48.Foamboard is my choice for building construction and your idea of adding bird gravel for texture is exellent.A nice suttle effect. If you consider this practice,I can't wait for what's next.

Very nice diorama Johan. Lots of nice details everywhere and I like the fact you put a lot of work into these details, as it makes it worthwhile looking for them. The only thing that stands out to me is the growth between the concrete squares ... it shows age, so maybe some oil spill and suitable weathering for these as well, would add some more to final appearance?

Really glad to see this one complete, excellent work! There are so many details, I don’t know where to start … but I must say I love the weathering on everything particularly the large metal doors.
