Gave myself an early Christmas present and ordered the Blast Models upgrade set for the M1117 that has been lingering on my workbench. While waiting for the set arrive, I have been checking pictures, and so far I have noted that pictures on Blast's website ( and in the build article in the latest Model Military International magazine) show the DUKE antennae mounted on the right side of the vehicle, while most reference photos of the actual vehicle show it mounted on the left. Is Blast's placement incorrect, or does it matter? Also, does anyone know of any reference shots of an actual Guardian sporting the LRAD as depicted in the Blast set? So far Google searches and Prime Portal have been unsuccessful...

Duke can go pretty much anywhere on an ASV. I saw them on left, right, rear whatever. Only saw an LRAD once, and it was mounted on an 1151 meaning it never left the super FOB where I saw it. I think they might have had it for the detention facility but I'm not sure. I certainly never saw one mounted to an ASV. Maybe that was an Iraq thing but I can't really see the utlitiy of such a device in Afghanistan with the exception of Kabul. I can only speak for what I saw in RC East however, the south is a different ball game and as with any AFV in Afganistan, anything is possible. Also, if you plan on doing and current Afghanistan theater vehicle, ditch the Rhino.

The LRAS mounted on the M1117 you saw may have been an M1200 Armored Knight. It is the newest vehicle for Artillery Combat Observation Laser Teams (COLTs). It looks like below.
New World Minatures is coming out with an M1200 conversion for Trumpeter's M1117. It is supposed to be out soon, hopefully...

Great...I thought New World cancelled that conversion. That's one I definitely want. One question- why do they mount them on the M1200? Doesn't seem like it would fit into the M1200s job

The COLTs are only Laser Observation teams in name now. Since we don't really use Copperhead Laser Guided rounds any longer, they are really long range observers for GPS artillery (Excaliber and GMLRS) and JDAMs. The LRAS, along with the targeting software suite of the M1200 serves that purpose very well.

Correct I have not yet decided if the M-1200 or the M-1117 will ever be released, it's a bit labor intensive!
There are only three full kis of the M-1200 kits floating around and they are all owned by modelers with the name of Arnold, Sid Arnold and Arnold "The Gun aka Sopmod" Lucero.
I will release the wheel sets, direct order only at $30 a set.

Ahh, I was wondering why the M1200 would need an LRAD and Gino was discribing an LRAS. I just became lost in the nomenclature (and confuse easily)

Henk, I hope you do at least release the M1200 conversion for the Trumpeter kit. I know I would get one.

Roger, the LRAD is rare, LRAS is everywhere now. There is now an upgrade to the OGPK that allows mounting of an LRAS to anything that can mount that particular turret. Most commonly seen thus far on M-ATV's.

O.K., now I get it. That was a repost of Chris' post from earlier in the year. I was wondering how you fit into the MWM machine. Thanks anyways for posting. Lets hope Chris decides to market it afterall. I have heard rumors he may soon.

Thanks for all the replies, guys!
Steve: thanks for the tip on the Rhino vis-a-vis A-Stan; how about the tow bars I have seen some ASV's mount on the front; is that still current practice? Was actually considering doing that anyway since I so far haven't seen anyone do that on a model.

Tow bars and big ass tow ropes are also fine.
