Hi Guys,

I'm working on my T-70 again, after months of not doing anything with it. I'm not far off painting now, and i just want to plan the "look." My question is, how rusty would the Soviets on the Eastern Front have let their tanks get? I'm planning on doing an early winter scheme, pre-whitewash. The idea being that the tank has seen extensive action from the spring onward. Would it be extensively rusty, or would they have patched it up during the seasons? I don't want to go overboard as I have tank riders and a Zis-3 to go ith it and I want some level of realism although this is my first attempt at serious armour modelling. I will paint the Zis-3 as if it is newer, only one or two months out of the factory.

So, the essential question is, how rusty would a tank get on the Eastern Front in 9 months of service?

Thanks .

Will.

Personally, I'd limit rust to the mufflers, tracks, and any damaged sheet metal where the metal has buckled and the paint has flaked. Maybe a chip or two around the hatches. Factory-applied, lead-based paints were pretty durable. Rust and paint chipping tends to be very overdone currently.
If you want to model really degraded finishes, choose a Third World subject, where a tank could go decades between paint jobs.
