Asphalt roads

What is a good way to make asphalt roads. I was thinking of using drywall compound, tinting it, sealing it once it dries and then painting it.

I've seen it done with fine sandpaper. Easy to trim to size and sprayed black than dry-brushed. Looks great when done. Quite convincing.
