I've done a search and while there are lots of threads documenting that FS 24087 was the basic vehicle paint color for US forces in Nam, there isn't much available in choices for model paint. Is there anything currently available that comes close? I'd prefer water-based (Polly scale or Tamiya). I have several Pollyscale colors, but can't find one that looks "right".
On the decal front, I'm looking for vehicle registration number decals, front bumper, hood etc for 1/35. Is the white stencil style the same as WW2?
Thanks!

Hi Warren,
I have it from a very good source that Tamiya JGSDF (Japanese Ground Self Defence Force) OD is the closest you'll get to US OD in Vietnam.
Dont forget that this is for US Army. USMC is much greener, apprently.
Let me know how you get on.
Joe.

First here is a good web site to help match pait to FS & RLM.
http://www.paint4models.com/paintchart/paintconversionchart20100101a.html#
As Joe stated the best match for the US Army is Tamiya XF-4 JGSDF OD. For USMC vehicles use MM Acryl USMC Green

I would not get too hyped up about the correct color on Army equipment in Vietnam. And here's my thoughts as to why:
1. The paint faded so fast that it actually looked like somebody added a white or buff color to it. The fading of course started at the top and worked it way down the sides. Then the bottom half would have a red dust coating (unless your visiting the rubber plantations)
2. THe Army appears to have used two different shades of O.D. in Vietnam. You really began to notice this when touching up scrapes and chips. The newer one seemed to be slightly lighter in green (but not what the Marines used). I don't know if it was a color variation per lot or did TACOM actually do a color change themselves. But it was noticable

Gary does have a point.....most of my 60s and 70s builds I use a grey filter to give a faded/chaulky look to the suface. Use more coats on the top than the bottom to get the gradual transition.
Then the red dust!!

Hi Warren
The first number in FS color 595 identifies the color glossiness
To be exact
1 is gloss
2 is satin
3 is matt
So you can have 3 colors equal in tone but different in glossiness
F.E
fs 16440 Light Gull Gray Gloss
fs 26440 Light Gull Gray Satin
fs 36440 Light Gull Gray Matt
So if you are looking for the fs 24087 and you haven't find yet, you have in my opinion to look for 34087. Actually there are a lot of 34087 paint on sale. You'll obtain the right color adding a coat of satin paint

Thanks for all the info and leads. As for the 34087, from what I can see, the Pollyscale is a newer color blend as it looks too brown for Nam era (they call it x34087). I agree that in Nam there didn't seem to be any standards for much of anything. Uniforms faded fast, gear was whatever one could find that would get the job done. I'll follow up on the info here and worst case, I'll buy myself a can of 24087 for restoration projects and then try to match it.

I have an old modelling manual with color corrispondences
On this I read:
Fs 34087
Polly s corrispondences:
PCA 808
PCA 819
PCA 832
PCF 79
You should try to see in this range if there is one color which matches better
On the same book about the 34087 is written:
In the last Fs 595 update the 14087 has become 14084 the 24087 has become 24084, and there's a new 34084
The 34087 has become 34088 (nb 34088 is not a mistake)
So if you are looking for the 34087 you can try to look also the x4084 corrispondence and the 34088
In lifecolor catalogue there is this product
![](../../../www.dellepiane.net/LC---CS11.jpg)
(but the colors are on sale also separately)
You can find all the olive drab shades, even the faded OB
Cheers

Thanks again. Looks like I'll be looking for a different line of paint soon, Pollyscale has terminated their military paint line (Thanks Testors!). Must have been too much competition for their Model Master series.

Reportedly, OD paint was reformulated in the 1960's to reflect more infrared, specifically for Vietnam (nothing to do with night vision equipment--simply to keep the interior cooler). The new paint was greener than FS-24087, but less so than Marine Corps Green. This may be the paint matched to the JGSDF Olive Drab.
There was also another flat Olive Drab introduced for Army helicopters in 1965, which was lighter and warmer than the original FS-24087/34087. This is the revised FS-34087 found in editions of the FS-595a directory issued after 1967 or so (my edition has the lighter chip pasted over the darker chip). Model Master FS-34087 Olive Drab is a good match for this. Tamiya Olive Drab is a good match for the original color.
