Hi Everyone

I'm building this kit and can not find the exhaust pipe. does any one have a picture of it?

I'm going to scratch build the T30 cargo carrier that was built on the same chassis to go with it. I'm looking for pictures of the interior of the cargo area. I found a couple of exterior pictures but no interior pictures.

Thank you for any help,

Merry Christmas to all,

Ralph

Hi Ralph

I have some scale drawings of the T30, including a top view. I'll send them to you ASAP. Talking about the T30, it's based on the M12 Gun Motor Carriage chassis, not the M40...

Merry Christmas from France

Ralph

I'm afraid I was wrong thinking that the M40-based T30 cargo carrier didn't exist

The drawings I have show the "other" T30, based on the modified M3 chassis of the M12 so they won't help you much with your project...

If the M40 is a similar layout to the M12 then I believe the exhaust exits under the sponson (hull side extension). I made an M12 with wading gear a few years ago and the extended exhaust exits between the 2nd and 3rd bogies.

The M12 and M30 used the M3 chassis while the M40 used a modified M4 Sherman chassis.

I am not sure what was used as the ammo carrier for the M40....Maybe an M4 HST with a M23 ammo trailer??

Mike

According to Hunnicutt's Sherman book, "Production plans for the [T30] cargo carrier were cancelled after the decision to use high speed tractors if companion vehicles were required for the T83 [M40] ot T89 [M43] motor carriages".

I think you're right about the M23. It was towed by M4 or M6 HSTs (with a M5 limber) or by 7.5 ton Mack NO trucks and could carry 60 8-inch rounds or 96 155mm gun rounds (from Doyle & Stansell High Speed Tractor book).

Thank you for the responce everyone.

Frenchy I still would like those drawings of the M30. I scratch built one but never finished it because of no interior cargo bay photos.

There where 5 or 6 T30 cargo carrier built and some converted to the T30E1 with crane and folddown steps and modified to tow the m23 ammunation trailer. They where built on the same chassis as the M40 155mm and M43 8-in. howitzer. Able to carry 102 x 155mm, or 66 x 8-in. or 32 x 240mm rounds.

I'm also scrtachbuilding the M23 Ammunition trailer. Most ot the body is done, going to use the limber from the " Long Tom ".

Check out my scratch builds. http://community.webshots.com/user/scratchbuilder

Cheers,

Ralph

Checked you scratchbuilt gallery. Could not find any photos of your M23 Ammo Trailer under construction. I am starting on two myself and would very much like tosee what you are doing.

It's a small point, but the M40 (and M12) had a 155mm gun, which is much longer than the 155mm howitzer. The M12 used the 155mm M1918 gun, a US version of the famous French 155mm GPF gun, and the M40 used the later 155mm M1 gun. The M41, based on the M24 light tank chassis, used the 155mm M1 howitzer, and except for the later torsion bar suspension with the larger wheels, looked very similar, at first glance, to the M43.

Hope that this is useful.
Best wishes,
Grant

Grant - The M43 is on an M4 chassis and is an 8 inch howitzer. It was developed at the same time as the M40. The M40 & M43 are not related to the M41 in any way. You are correct on the M41 with the M1 155mm howitzer.

Thank you, Mike.
What I meant was that if you look at a photo of one, it has the same general outline of the other.

Best wishes,
Grant
