Charlie
If this is Dragon kit #9021, no, it does not have the steel wheels. In fact, looking at the directions, it does not have any extra parts. Unlike some of Dragon/DML's other kits.
Nothing for the parts box from this kit.....LOL

Bummer.. was just hoping.. seeing how most Dragon kits have extra parts meant for other variants

Oh well...

Were the early L/70's made with the rubber rimmed road wheels?

Charlie,
Yes, you can build the JgPzr IV L/70 with rubber wheels. IIRC, the Italeri kit has both steel and rubber wheels. Also, the March 1995 issue of Fine Scale Modeler has an article on the Jagdpanzer IV written by George Bradford. If you can't lay your hands on a copy, PM me with your snail mail address and I'll copy it for you

Thanks for the offer Craig!.. Your word is good enough, no need to mail the article... I just got back in the hobby around 96/97.. so my FSM's don't go back that far!

Sorry, the Italeri Jagdpanzer IV kit is a combination that is neither flesh nor fowl and is nothing to use for a go-by. And just adding the L/70 gun tube to the Jagdpanzer IV will not make a Panzer IV/70. There are several differentiations between the two models.

The first 57 Jagdpanzer IV/70 had the rubber wheels but they quickly were destroyed due to the nose-heavy condition of the L/70 model; and that is the condition that brought the silent bloc roadwheels to be installed on the first bogie of the Jadgpanzer IV/70 or Panzer IV/70. The first 57 were quickly retro-fitted with the silent bloc roadwheels; however many were left.

The IV/70 had only one MG cover on the right side of the front plate, the one near the driver's visor being deleted. The horizontal muffler of the early L/48 model was replaced by the vertical exhaust stacks. The tool storage was relocated on the IV/70 and a Nahverteidigungswaffe was added to the hull top. The glacis plate transmission access covers have the air intake covers eliminated. and reduced to a simple flat plate access hatch with handle. The four return rollers on the L/48 have been reduced to three on the IV/70. The roadwheels on the IV/70 have a different hab than the L/48 versions.

Also pilzen were added to the roof for the late models but this is not necessary except for a 1945 variant.

PH,

Good information, but one thing, I had read somewhere, some early Pz IV L/70 (which is by the way, what German actually calls them), did have 4 return roller, the later ones had 3 of them which was Pz IV ausf J chasis, is this correct?

Again, it appears the original 57 had the four return rollers. I think these are ID'd by the rollers, standard Panzer IV muffler and no silent bloc roadwheels. If you see one with the four rollers and silent block roadwheels it's probably one of the retrofitted early issue.

Actually, Dave, it's a Panzer IV/70(V) to distinguish it from the Panzer IV/70(A) or Zwischenlösung version.
