I am interested in making slings for this era for the allied and axis forces. is there a tutorial of a good sight to look at ref photos.

Check out "Modelling the US Army in WWII" There's some great stuff over there. Check the "weapons" section. There's some good close-ups of US rifle slings.

I use aber PE buckles and 1/32 inch pin striping tape, which I think is for RC cars. It is a perfect width for straps. You can see some examples in my build below. Just remember to strip off the top layer of the tape which is clear, it won't paint correctly with that clear layer on.
